Job Description Summary
As the CNC Machine Operator, you will perform a wide variety of manufacturing operations in largely self‑directed operations. This includes setting up N/C and conventional machines, running multiple machines (mill/drill machines, lathes, presses, etc.), and working from Work Station Instructions (WSIs). You will be responsible for visually checking parts, maintaining proper records, and acting as a process change agent when needed.
This position is eligible for either a Machinist I or a Machinist II. Hires will be placed at the appropriate level based on years of machinist experience and/or formal machining education, and performance on a machinist assessment.
Machinist I: $33.00/hour; after 6 months of successful performance you will progress to $34.84/hour.
Machinist II: $34.84/hour; after 6 months of successful performance you will progress to $36.66/hour.
Hires that pass their probationary period and meet Machinist II level qualifications will be eligible to re‑assess and grow to a Machinist III.
- Set up and operate conventional or numerically controlled machine tools that require high skill.
- Interpret engineering drawings, change notices, blueprints, sketches, and method sheets of complicated parts.
- Machine all types of metals used within Wilmington machine shops.
- Check work during various machining stages with complex measuring devices such as micrometers, calipers, indicators, gages, scales, etc.
- Perform precise indicating on parts where true indicator reading (TIR) is important.
- Maintain records, logbooks, charts, and initiate electronic or manual reports when required.
- Train operators to use certain equipment when qualified to run it.
- Meet standards set forth by Manufacturing Engineering and Quality Assurance.
- Follow sequences, directions, and tooling call‑out on method sheets.
- Achieve all required tolerances and finishes that produce quality parts in the allotted time.
- Accurately serialize parts with the current marking method.
- Set up, operate, and maintain B4C (boron carbide) machine equipment and manufacture B4C capsules for control rods.
- Start up, load, monitor, unload, and shut down annealing furnace, autoclave, and nitriding furnaces.
- Anneal, autoclave, and nitrid parts per process equipment instructions and monitor furnaces for quality and maintenance.
- Test cleaning solutions for specific gravity and alkalinity concentration and adjust bath as required.
- Operate all lifting devices and cranes associated with manufacturing.
- Perform other relevant duties as assigned.
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- At least three (3) years of manufacturing experience in set‑up and operations of CNC machining processes, or a 2‑year degree from an accredited machinist training program that includes CNC machining.
- Minimum two (2) years of experience with basic measuring instruments and gauges (micrometers, dial indicators, verniers) and an understanding of Total Indicator Readings (TIR)/Full Indicator Movement (FIM).
- Minimum two (2) years of experience operating machining equipment (saws, shears, drill presses, punch presses, centerless grinders, small lathes, mills, CNC machines, etc.).
- Physical ability to manually lift moderately heavy parts and occasionally (50‑60 lbs) for short durations, with or without reasonable accommodations.
- Proficient use of basic shop math (add, subtract, multiply, divide) and fractions/decimals to determine dimensions.
- Proficient reading and interpreting mechanical blueprints and drawings.
- Knowledge and use of basic computer systems for furnace controls.
- Required work location is our headquarters in Wilmington, NC (relocation assistance available).
