Machinist I
Operates and maintains lathe and milling machines. Reviews drawings, instructions, blueprints or samples to ensure accurate production. Takes precise measurements for cutting or shaping. Selects appropriate machine and settings for a given task; sets up and operates a variety of computer‐controlled and mechanically controlled equipment to produce precision metal parts instruments and tools.
Working EnvironmentThis work is typically performed while standing for long periods in a machine shop or manufacturing environment. May be exposed to hazards from equipment, chemicals or toxic materials. May also be exposed to noise and debris during machining. Work may require some physical effort in the handling of heavy materials in excess of 70 pounds.
Key Contributions- Review samples, drawings or instructions to understand specifications of output.
- Plan the sequence of necessary actions for the completion of a job.
- Take measurements and mark material for cutting or shaping.
- Select appropriate machines (e.g. lathes) and position or load material for a job.
- Run CNC machines to produce tools & parts to dimensional/tolerance requirements.
- Monitor machine while working to adjust the feed, maintain temperature and identify issues.
- Check output to ensure consistency with specifications and discard defects.
- Participate in brainstorming / problem solving with Engineering & Production personnel to solve related problems.
- Perform preventive & basic maintenance to equipment.
- Recommend new technologies for continuous improvement.
- Work with composites & other materials.
- Comply with work instructions for all machining operations.
- Comply with safety rules and regulations during course of duties.
1-3 years of relevant work experience.
Beneficial Skills / Experience- Understanding of material properties & characteristics.
- Working knowledge of various measuring gages: micrometers, pin gages, dial indicator, screw pitch gage, height gage, and comparator stand/gage.
- Advanced Computer Knowledge recommended.
- Ability to do trigonometry and general math computations.
- Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and manuals.
- Ability to interact effectively with customers, peers, management, manufacturing personnel, and both technical and non‑technical people.
- Previous CNC machining experience recommended.
