GTS products and services span a spectrum that includes mission‑critical combat systems processors; C4

ISR; technology development including threat detection, biometric identification systems, and composite applications for munitions, armor and energy storage; avionics test systems; and lifecycle logistics support and repair. Our Rapid Composites Prototype Center department in Virginia Beach, VA is searching for a Composite & Mechanical Tech II to work on‑site at 777 Seahawk Circle in Virginia Beach, VA 23452.

General Description

The Composite Technician Level 2 will be able to lead a variety of composite fabrication processes including filament winding, hand layup, resin transfer molding, and basic machining. On‑the‑job‑training will be provided where necessary. Will lead a team of fabricators requires excellent situational awareness skills. Will work with complex machinery. Will handle and mix chemicals such as but not limited to epoxies and curing agents and solvents like acetone, MEK, and alcohols.

Will assemble complex precision assemblies. Will prepare and document processes and work in a dynamic team environment.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
  • Work in a dynamic team environment, able to multitask and learn product required processes utilizing various machine types with detailed operations.
  • Safely handle and mix chemicals such as but not limited to acetone, solvents, epoxy, alcohols etc. formally trained.
  • Ability to work in close proximity of powerful magnets and magnetic fields.
  • Reads, interprets and works from drawings with minimal supervision.
  • Learn the set up and operation of machines such as: manual mill, manual lathe, horizontal & vertical bandsaw, curing oven (table top & commercial), welder (MIG, TIG and Stick), small and large press, ESEM, rheometer, portable heater, part washer, chip vacuum, winding machine, overhead crane, epoxy mixing machine and flywheel assembler.
  • Ability to fixture as required to maintain tolerance requirements of the drawings.
  • Ability to operate manual equipment; lathes and mills.
  • Produce and maintain all parts characteristics according to specifications as well as visually inspect tools for excessive wear.
  • Fit and assemble precision parts.
  • Inspect product samples for highest quality acceptance using proper inspection procedures to maintain S.P.C charts, control plans, etc. as required.
  • Perform minor preventative maintenance as required and report unusual condition, safety issues or defective material.
  • Protect the safety of self, personnel and facility through adherence to safety standards and situational awareness.
  • Provide support to investigations of highly complex products.
  • Provide support to other engineering disciplines especially electrical, wiring, machining and welding.
  • Performs work within quality standards and by deadline.
  • Able to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
Work Experience Requirements
  • Superior computer skills using Microsoft Windows 10 and Excel are required along with using complex mathematics.
  • Ability to handle and experience working with metal.
  • Safely mix chemicals.
Educational Requirements (or equivalent)

High School Diploma

  • Completion of apprentice program in welding or machining or 2-4 yrs. working in a relevant environment
  • Ability to run complex machinery.
  • Perform Setup and lead the team in complex fabrication operation including filament winding of composite materials.
  • Lead others in the precision assembly of components.
  • Select and install tooling as required by process sheet for setup to manufacture parts.
