New Hanover County is seeking a volunteer to serve as the Veterans Treatment Court Mentor within the Adult Enhancement Services division of the Community Justice Services department. Mentors provide support, encouragement, and assistance to justice-involved veterans by attending court hearings with assigned mentees, attending support meetings, and maintaining confidentiality. The Vision of the Mentoring Program is that "No Veteran is left behind."
We are committed to achieving a bond between the veteran and their mentor based on shared values and sacrifices. Please note that this is an unpaid volunteer position.
- Applicant(s) must be a veteran and able to pass a background check and drug screening.
- Once accepted into the program, participants must attend three (3) Veterans Treatment Court Hearings, complete Mentor Training, take an oral Oath before the VTC Judge, and sign a letter of commitment.
- Individuals must possess the ability to effectively work with justice-involved veterans, court staff, fellow mentors, and community agencies. Must provide excellent customer service to internal and external customers and assist in identifying issues and providing resources.
- Bilingual skills in English and Spanish are desirable but not mandatory.
- Volunteers will be trained by the Mentor Coordinator and on the job. Applicants must provide a copy of their DD214 or other documentation indicating type of military discharge.
The Community Justice Services department provides an array of prevention and intervention programs and services targeted at preventing and reducing crime risk for at-risk, diverted, and offender populations through our Youth Empowerment Services and Adult Enhancement Services Divisions. Our citizen-focused team is comprised of 38 dedicated professionals who work with youth, adults, and families to increase the likelihood that they will become productive members of society.
Hours:Hours for this position will vary, but the volunteer can expect to work 5-15 hours per week.
Minimum Qualifications:- Must be a veteran from one of the branches of the United States Military or from one of their corresponding Reserve or Guard branches.
- Must have a valid N.C. driver’s license.
