Temporary Para educator III - Inza Wood Middle School

This is a Temporary Trial position for the remainder of the  school year. The role works 7 hr/day, 5 day/week under the Classified Bargaining Unit.

DEFINITION

The middle level general education para educator delivers instruction to small groups of students in designated classrooms in core subject areas. The instruction is designed by classroom teachers as part of their regular planning and with consideration for individualstudents' learning and language needs. General education para educators use the materials provided by teachers to provide guided practice with applying skills and showing understanding of the content in the lesson.

Paraeducators may be reviewing and reinforcing concepts with groups of students or extending learning with students, based on direction and plans from classroom teachers.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

An employee in this position is expected to help the teacher establish and maintain a climate of learning; work as part of a team; demonstrate initiative in responding to students’ day-to-day needs. Due to the interpersonal nature of working with students, a positive attitude and warm personality are considered essential characteristics of a para educator. We expect all of our employees to model a Growth Mindset and demonstrate a belief that all students can learn and all students belong as part of their classroom & school community.

* Additional pay is granted to those with a Bachelor’s Degree or degree from an accredited paraprofessional program. This is designated as Para educator-IIIA.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Work individually and in small groups with students at all skill levels with the goal of fostering independence in the areas of academics, social skills, communication, behavior, and functional routines. Collect and record data. Prepare Instructional materials. Support instruction and assessment of individual students and small groups. Provide support for students in all school settings, including special education classrooms, general education classrooms, gymnasiums, lunch rooms, playgrounds, and in the community.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

  • Instructional strategies to support a broad range of students, including students with disabilities.
  • Business English, spelling, punctuation and mathematics;
  • Current office practices, procedures, keyboarding and equipment;
  • Proficient use of computer technology.

Ability to:

  • Promote independence in students;
  • Provide individual and small group instruction under the direction of the licensed teacher;
  • Establish and maintain harmonious relationships with students and fellow employees;
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions;
  • Maintain accurate records and collect data;
  • Implement behavior, medical, and safety protocols;
  • Appropriately respond to and direct students;
  • Maintain confidentiality in all phases of work, i.e. records, meetings, parent rights, etc.
  • Use computer technology proficiently;
  • Routinely lift up to 50 pounds unassisted and over 50 pounds with assistance;
  • Complete all district required training.

Education:

  • Qualified applicant must have AA/AS degree, 72 credits, Para educator Program or equivalent exam, BA/BS degree, or MA/MS degree.
