Instructional Assistant II – Special Needs Assistant

Reports To: Classroom Teacher, Director of Early Learning

• Tutor individuals or small groups, typically with a disability, reinforcing instruction and maintaining progress records.
• Participate in instructional teams, including remediation teams, and develop relationships with parents, team members, and support staff.
• Transport students to and from activities, assist in preparation and implementation of treatment, and support lab work as needed.
• Prepare and organize lessons, administer and score assessments, and assist with diagnostic testing and IEP recording.
• Monitor behavior, report progress, and assist with lab work and other tasks.
• Perform routine clerical duties: prepare materials, operate copy and educational equipment, and maintain records.
• Support teachers by setting up work areas, displays, exhibits and distributing supplies.
• Assist in overseeing students during labs, activities, supplies inventory, personal hygiene, and transportation.
• Provide emotional support, guidance, and examples to students.
• Consult with teachers to ensure program effectiveness and meet student needs.
• Contact parents of absences and conduct home visits when necessary.
• Maintain health and safety of students and supervise lunchroom, playground, emergency drills, assemblies, and field trips.
• Participate in meetings, in‑service training, and other assignments.

• Basic subjects: arithmetic, grammar, spelling, language, reading.
• Safe classroom and playground practices.
• Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary.
• Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
• Basic record‑keeping techniques.
• Ability to learn child guidance principles and practices.
• Effective communication with students, parents, staff and the public, including ethnic communities.
• Routine clerical support of classroom activities.
• Print and write legibly; perform basic math quickly and accurately.
• Follow oral and written directions and understand policies and procedures.
• Operate instructional and office equipment.
• Lift up to 25 pounds.

• High school diploma, G.E.D. Certificate or demonstrated progress toward a G.E.D. with one year of experience working with children and a passing score on the Kentucky Para educator Assessment.
• OR completed two years of study at a higher education institution or obtained an associate (or higher) degree.

Position Type: Full‑Time

Salary: $14.39 to $19.11 per hour
