Oral and Maxillofacial Dental Nurse

We are delighted to offer an exciting opportunity for a dedicated and passionate Dental Nurse to join our expanding Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department on a part‑time basis (4 days per week). This varied and rewarding role also provides the opportunity to support our Head and Neck specialties, including Ophthalmology and ENT, as required.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, hard‑working individual with excellent communication skills and a genuine passion for patient care. Putting patients at the heart of everything you do is essential, alongside a warm, compassionate approach and the ability to build trust with people from all walks of life.

This role would suit a highly motivated team player with the skills and sensitivity to support patients who may experience dental anxiety or have complex needs. Strong organisational abilities, good manual dexterity, and the confidence to communicate effectively within a multidisciplinary team are key to succeeding in this position.

The primary base for this role is the Royal Hampshire County Hospital
, with some flexibility required to provide occasional cross‑site support at Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital as part of our wider team.

Main duties of the job
  • To be responsible for providing assistance to the consultants and colleagues in all Head and Neck specialties.
  • To assist and maintain efficient and effective care of patients in line with best practice and current guidelines.
  • To ensure the highest standards of hygiene is always maintained in line with Trust guidelines and policies.
  • To prepare clinical areas with specialist equipment and supplies ready for the Consultant clinic team. Preparing clinics in advance to ensure an organised smooth‑running department, checking results have been received in time and communicating with other departments when required.
  • Supporting Maxillofacial theatre lists in the Treatment Centre.
  • If appropriately qualified, carry out dental radiological examinations as indicated and adhering to the Radiological Guidelines.
Job responsibilities

The successful applicant will assist with the day‑to‑day running of the department and provide chairside support, so that high‑quality, efficient patient care is delivered at all times, whilst ensuring compliance is maintained to a gold standard.

Training & Qualifications
  • Registered Dental Nurse with GDC
  • NEBDN qualification or an appropriate professional qualification or equivalent
  • 5 GCSEs or equivalent
  • Certificate in conscious sedation / Award in IV sedation
Experience & Knowledge
  • Experience of working in a clinical setting
  • Able to demonstrate current knowledge and identify own learning needs
  • Current/previous experience in either hospital or community setting
  • Experience of working in the specialty
Skills & Ability
  • Excellent communication skills with effective interpersonal skills
  • Well organised, able to prioritise
  • Good listener, ability to give people full attention
  • Ability to work as part of a team with a professional approach towards work and colleagues
  • IT Skills
  • Ability to work under own initiative without direct supervision, being proactive
