About the Role
We have an exciting opportunity for a General Practitioner to join our team at HMP Winchester, a category B remand prison based in Winchester, Hampshire. The prison houses around 706 patients and is a busy, fast‑paced environment. This position will focus on receptions, supporting the new intake of patients, and will involve working closely with a multi‑disciplinary team including SMS prescriber, ACP and other GP’s.
Hours
Wednesday 6pm‑10pm
Saturday 1pm‑6pm
Salary
This position is part‑time. You will receive an annual salary up to £131,157 per annum FTE depending on experience.

Legal and background checks
Candidates are required to have a legal right to work in the UK and, due to the nature of the role, offers of employment will be subject to additional vetting and security checks.
What you’ll be doing
- Provide clinical assessment and diagnosis to patients’ requirements and make timely decisions regarding future management
- Prescribe for patients, regularly review medications and monitor repeat prescriptions
- Provide a highly specialist resource to other members of the healthcare team at site, as well as the patients you work with, having active involvement in clinical governance and effectiveness activities. Include diagnosis, investigation, treatment and referral as appropriate in line with guidelines and pathways.
Training and development
We recognise training and development is key, therefore we provide a training portal to facilitate your needs and have an in‑depth induction for all staff whether you have experience of working in prisons or not. You will gain insight into mental health and substance misuse, as well as the opportunity to work towards your RCGP level 2.

Qualifications required
- MBChB or MBBS
- Inclusion on the GMC Register and GP Performers List
- Evidence of engagement with annual appraisal
- Experience working as a General Practitioner in community general practice
- Ability to work with patients with a history of substance misuse
- RCGP Certificate in Substance Misuse 1 and 2, or prepared to undertake these
