You’ll provide technical assistance in the delivery of the network management/highway maintenance service, including highways inspections and the design of simple highways maintenance/minor improvement schemes. Additionally, you will assist in delivery of our duties regarding regulation of activities on the highway and our response to highway and weather emergencies both in and (sometimes) out of normal hours.

And if that’s not enough, you don’t even need to have any previous highways experience. We will provide you with excellent training and development to help you succeed and develop your career within this fantastic organisation.

As an Advanced Technician, you’ll assist engineers in delivering a wide variety of highway repairs throughout Hampshire. You’ll also handle highway emergencies, respond to adverse weather, and enforce highway regulations to ensure the efficient use of Hampshire's highway network. By maintaining roads and footways, your work will directly impact the entire community.

Responsibilities
  • Provide technical assistance in the delivery of the network management/highway maintenance service.
  • Assist with delivery of duties regarding regulation of activities on the highway.
  • Respond to highway and weather emergencies both in and out of normal hours.
  • Assist engineers in delivering a wide variety of highway repairs throughout Hampshire.
  • Handle highway emergencies and respond to adverse weather.
  • Enforce highway regulations to ensure the efficient use of Hampshire’s highway network.
Qualifications
  • GCSE-level education (or equivalent) in English and Maths, or relevant experience that demonstrates the ability to perform effectively across a broad range of responsibilities.
  • A genuine interest in highway engineering and the maintenance of a large road network.
  • Strong IT skills and the ability to record information accurately.
  • Clear communication, both written and verbal, essential.
  • Flexibility and willingness to work outside normal hours when required, especially during weather‑related or emergency situations.
  • Ability to manage your own workload and meet deadlines.
  • Advantage if you hold a BTEC in Civil Engineering or have equivalent experience.
  • Experience providing occasional cover for more senior colleagues.
  • Experience supporting or mentoring new starters.
  • Broader knowledge of the service area.
  • Capacity to innovate and share new ideas.
  • Capacity to take on additional responsibilities associated with the next level of the role.
