Position: First-Year Admissions Counselor

Shenandoah University’s Office of Admissions is accepting applications for a full‑time, benefited First‑Year Admissions Counselor located on our main campus in Winchester, Virginia.

The First‑Year Admissions Counselor recruits students within a designated territory to meet enrollment goals. The role involves developing recruitment strategies, serving as the first contact for prospective students, liaising with families and university departments, and managing relationships throughout the admissions process.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with the First‑Year Recruitment team to analyze data and evaluate prior recruitment strategies.
  • Develop, adjust, and execute individual recruitment plans and outreach campaigns, including events, school visits, and college fairs.
  • Create innovative approaches to raise awareness and engage prospective students, families, counselors, and community organizations.
  • Review applications, assess candidate fit, and notify applicants of admission decisions.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Represent the university professionally at off‑campus recruitment events.
  • Assist in planning and executing campus visits for prospective students, families, and groups, coordinating with various university departments.
  • Deliver presentations and tours during campus visits and special events such as Open Houses, Student Shadow Days, Interviews, and Auditions.
  • Manage Saturday visitation schedules and distribute visits among the Freshmen Recruitment team.
  • Maintain student records and communicate with prospective families.
  • Coordinate, monitor, and report on recruitment programs for special populations, including the Presidential Scholars program and Shenandoah Conservatory auditions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors.
Required Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication.
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred.
  • Familiarity with Apple and Microsoft software, including Word and Excel.
  • Experience with admissions technologies such as the CRM Slate by Technolutions, preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail, ability to prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.
  • Comfortable using various technology applications.
  • Basic data‑analysis skills to achieve goals.
  • Willingness to work evenings, weekends, and travel overnight (12‑18 weeks per year) while adhering to university travel policies.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. in and out of a vehicle.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean record and ability to pass a driving background check.
