Scope of CareThe Registered Radiation Therapist provides daily care of cancer patients, including accurate interpretation and delivery of radiation treatments, in accordance with the prescription and instruction of the radiation oncologist. The Radiation Therapist performs simulations, provides clinical instruction for students, assists in brachytherapy procedures, is on‑call, and schedules treatments. The role requires daily quality assurance, treatment planning support, triage of sick patients, and may involve mandatory overtime and shift work.
Responsibilities- Review prescriptions, diagnosis, chart, and patient identification for each patient receiving treatment.
- Schedule patients for appointments and provide education for pre‑ and post‑treatment.
- Prepare the treatment room and equipment according to the prescription, immobilization devices, field sizes, treatment devices, and lead protection devices.
- Ensure collaboration with the physicist and dosimetrist at each treatment initiation.
- Act as liaison with supportive care physicians, nurses, and social workers; maintain open communication with doctors, therapists, RNs, and dosimetrists.
- Take and check images of all treated areas, process and file them.
- Transfer patients to the treatment couch, ensuring awareness of IVs and other equipment.
- Maintain visual and audible contact during treatments to monitor for unusual reactions or events; report and assist in emergency treatment when necessary.
- Maintain patient markings, changing only per physician direction.
- Reinforce recommendations from physicians, dietitians, etc., regarding reaction to treatment and care of the radiated area; change dressings as needed.
- Ensure radiation safety measures and protocols are observed at all times.
- Check charges daily for accurate billing and document treatment doses accurately.
- Use the electronic charting system consistently; check name, date of birth, and treatment area in the daily timeout.
- Ensure proper CT setup for IMRT and the 3‑D patients; create proper immobilization devices for 2‑D, 3‑D, and IMRT patients.
- Document proper setup instructions and all pertinent information for dosimetry calculations in charts.
- Update simulation manuals as required; review documents and prepare blocks for simulations.
- Assist in machine warm‑up; machine warm‑up required within 6 months of hire.
- Run simulation alone; optional HDR; lead HDR optional; lead stereotactic procedures optional.
- Completion of an accredited Radiation Therapy program.
- Certified & Licensure:
Registration through American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) required. - BLS Certification (Basic Life Support) – American Heart Association (AHA) required; new hires must have AHA certification before orientation.
- Analytical ability to set up equipment properly, position and align patients and equipment to very close tolerances and recreate such positions on a daily basis.
- Interpersonal skills necessary to explain therapy and treatment programs to patients to allay apprehensions and elicit their cooperation.
- Strong skills to effectively communicate with physicians, staff, physicist, and patients.
- Ability to communicate with and provide care for adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.
- Proficiency in simulation, IMRT, and 3‑D patient setup; ability to run simulation alone.
- Optional HDR and lead stereotactic procedures.
