Job Description

The registered professional nurse is responsible for utilizing nursing skills to carry out the nursing process, including assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, evaluation, documentation, and time management. The nurse is responsible for quality communication, teamwork, leadership/professionalism, and for directing, coordinating, and implementing patient teaching, quality/safety initiatives, and activities of other health team personnel while maintaining standards of professional nursing.

RN II Responsibilities and Requirements

  • Provide care for the population assigned to the unit.
  • Complete yearly mandatory competencies and any unit-specific competencies identified by the Director/Designee.
  • Participate in the Professional Practice Ladder requirements, including acting as Charge Nurse, PI Activity, department initiatives, and sharing information with the Director/Designee and coworkers from unit or hospital committees.
  • Maintain current portfolio and submit annually by March 1.
  • Solicit and validate patient/family satisfaction; participate in peer review; develop educational materials for staff, patients, and family members.

Education and Experience

  • Education:

    Associates Degree in Nursing (RN Diploma, ASN or ADN) required;
    Bachelors Nursing (BSN) preferred.
  • Experience:

    Advancement to this level requires a minimum of 1872 total hours (936 hours if BSN held) of RN experience and completion of a performance evaluation.

Licensure and Certifications

  • Licenses:
    Current RN license required; multi-state license under the Nurse Licensure Compact or single-state license valid in Virginia only.
  • Certifications:

    BLS Certification (American Heart Association, Healthcare Provider) required; relevant specialty certification preferred.
  • New hires must have AHA-compliant certification prior to completion of orientation.

Qualifications

  • Meets all requirements of a RN I.
  • Competent to provide care based on the cognitive, physical, emotional, and developmental stages of patients.
  • Competent to provide care using the nursing process.
  • Must have reliable means of phone communication with hospital staff.

Additional Information

  • Based on primary state of residency, must be licensed or eligible to practice as a Registered Nurse in Virginia (Nurse Licensure Compact or single-state license valid in Virginia).
