Vascular Access Specialist – Full Time
Valley Health – Winchester, VA
Job SummaryThe Vascular Access Specialist is responsible for orienting and coaching staff in evidence‑based vascular access practices, developing competencies, and leading quality‑improvement initiatives to prevent access complications such as CLABSI and extravasation.
Responsibilities / Duties- Orient and coach new and existing staff in evidence‑based vascular access across the continuum of care.
- Develop, monitor, and evaluate clinical and non‑clinical competencies in vascular access.
- Use evidence‑based practice in patient care.
- Lead and participate in continuous quality‑improvement monitoring, research, and goal setting in vascular access.
- Collaborate on initiatives to prevent vascular access complications (CLABSI, extravasation, etc.).
- Consult with staff, model appropriate resource utilization, and promote critical‑thinking skills.
- Participate in committees, special projects, and policy/standard updates with leadership.
- Facilitate staff education, patient education, and performance‑improvement committees.
- Assist leadership with outcome data evaluation and quality‑management analysis.
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) required or agreement to begin BSN within 1 year and complete within 5 years.
- RN experience preferred (years not specified).
- ICU or ED experience preferred.
- Licensed RN in Virginia required.
- BLS Certification required; new hires must hold AHA‑approved certification before orientation.
- Certification in Vascular Access through INS or AVA required within 2–3 years of hire.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support preferred.
- Excellent intravenous insertion skills and skill in ultrasound‑guided peripheral IV insertion.
- Skill in midline placement and sterile‑field maintenance.
- Knowledge of evidence‑based practice in vascular access.
- Planning, organizing, and managing complex functions.
- Clinical expertise and critical‑thinking/problem‑solving skills.
- Understanding of human growth/development stages and adult learning principles.
- Basic Excel skills for data collection and graph creation.
