Job Description

The Public Safety Officer, under the supervision of the Public Safety Lt., patrols assigned areas of the Medical Center to identify and respond to unsafe conditions and emergencies. The officer answers calls for service regarding unauthorized or illegal activity within the building or campus grounds. All officers respond to emergencies and calls to assist with combative patients or visitors, fire alarms, infant/child abduction, active shooter, etc.

On a routine basis, each officer performs inspections for hazards and unusual situations, locks or unlocks doors, handles trespassing issues, property receipt and issue, deceased patient transport, and tests and inspects Public Safety equipment throughout the campus monthly.

Must be able to work well with all levels of individuals ranging from administrators and physicians to indigent patients. Think quickly, apply common sense, local, state and federal laws, VH policies, and be a problem solver. Exhibit customer excellence at all times and model the VH mission, vision and values.

Each officer documents all rounds; writes reports about all incidents; submits reports by the end of the shift during which the incident occurred. Officers must be proficient in the use of the RMS Public Safety incident computer-based system and the VH Risk Qual System. Officers communicate information confidentially using appropriate methods.

Immediately corrects problems or writes appropriate work orders or memos, or reports problems to safety officers and others when safety‑related problems are observed. Inspect fire extinguishers, eye‑wash stations, conduct or assist others in conduct inspections such as Environment of Care Rounds, test and check alarm system equipment, perform fire watches, monitor camera systems, infant abduction systems, fire alarm systems, medical gas alarms, generator alarms, investigate loss and damage reports, assist law enforcement, and assist in custody of individuals as needed.

Each officer has strong working knowledge of the facility and campus, analyzes and coordinates responses to all alarms, performs inspection of buildings and doors to ensure they are secured after business hours, picks up cash deposits daily, searches patient rooms and property for contraband, and responds to Air‑Care landings and take‑offs.

All officers are courteous to the public, show professional attitude, and provide assistance to staff handling aggressive individuals, as well as intervene to maintain order when behind schedule.

Education & Experience

High School Diploma or GED required.

One year of previous law enforcement, public safety, college, and/or fire department experience preferred.

Certification & Licensures
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) – American Heart ‘Healthcare Provider’ (HCP) – AHA approved required.
  • American Heart Association (AHA) certification prior to completion of orientation required.
  • International Association for Healthcare Public Safety and Safety Basic Exam within 1 year required.
  • ASP baton, handcuff, OC foam spray and aggression management training within 6 months required.
Qualifications

Good public relations and communication skills.

Competent to interact with individuals of varying backgrounds and ethnicities.

Ability to work with individuals with special needs.

Display compassion and help ease pain and suffering.

Available for duty assignment at any Valley Health System facility; work on alternate shifts, flex schedule, holidays, and weekends.
