State Police Dispatchers are the “first‑first” responders, the essential communication link between the public and law enforcement. This is a deep, wide, and essential role where you will take calls from citizens in crisis, remain composed, and use telephone, radio, and computer systems to gather and disseminate critical information swiftly.
Responsibilities- Receive and respond to calls from the public and assist in dispatching troopers to incidents within their jurisdiction.
- Operate complex communications equipment and monitor radio frequencies.
- Assist in researching information for troopers on matters such as stolen vehicles and criminal records.
- Record, code, and enter pertinent law‑enforcement information and daily activity data into computer terminals and manual logs.
- Provide general information to the public and perform related duties as required.
- Calm individuals capable of making split‑second decisions.
- Proficiency in gathering and disseminating information quickly and accurately.
- Ability to multi‑task between telephone, radio, and computer systems in stressful situations.
- Comfort with computers, typing, data input, and using technology.
- Ability to remain composed under emergency stress and maintain cooperative relationships with others.
- Strong English communication skills – speaking and reading.
- Experience managing competing priorities while meeting deadlines.
- Experience working in emergency situations within a law‑enforcement agency.
- Experience viewing and operating a CCTV system.
- Experience operating a digital trunked police‐style radio system and multiple computers and radios simultaneously.
Upon offer, candidates must complete the Dispatch Training Academy, consisting of two phases:
: 8 weeks (320 hours) in Meriden, CT, covering CAD, telephone and radio training, critical incident management, and certifications (DSET, COLLECT, EMD, NIMS/ICS).
: 8 weeks of on‑the‑job training, shadowing a seasoned dispatcher and gradually assuming independent responsibilities.
Successful completion of both phases and the six‑month working test period results in promotion to State Police Dispatcher.
