Job Title:
Mechanical Designer

Job Description

The Mechanical Designer designs and develops automated, turnkey equipment for automotive and consumer product applications. This role spans the full lifecycle from concept development through detailed design and release, ensuring that solutions are robust, manufacturable, and aligned with customer specifications. The Mechanical Designer works closely with multidisciplinary teams to deliver complex custom automation systems that perform reliably in demanding manufacturing environments.

Responsibilities

  • Construct and modify 3D CAD models using Solid Works in accordance with customer standards for automated equipment and custom manufacturing applications.
  • Estimate design hours from concept through detailed design and release for both new designs and engineering changes, and communicate these estimates to support project planning.
  • Prepare layout and detail drawings that meet project timelines, ensuring designs are practical, innovative, and compliant with customer and internal requirements.
  • Review and interpret customer specifications, engineering schematics, and technical data to determine appropriate design approaches and generate all required engineering outputs.
  • Perform engineering calculations and select appropriate materials to achieve required functionality, performance, and durability of automated machinery and equipment.
  • Coordinate structural and finite element analysis activities to validate the functionality and integrity of designed equipment and incorporate findings into the design.
  • Oversee the development of part and assembly drawings by internal or outsourced designers, managing the full design scope for assigned projects.
  • Collaborate with other designers and cross‑functional team members to implement design changes that improve manufacturability, maintainability, and serviceability of equipment.
  • Follow established release procedures to issue complete drawing packages in digital and/or hardcopy formats to support purchasing, controls engineering, manufacturing, installation, and customer documentation.
  • Apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles to ensure accurate, repeatable manufacturing and assembly within automotive and related industry environments.
  • Concept, design, and detail manufacturing tooling and equipment for punch and weld machinery, including geo fixtures, respot stations, end‑of‑arm tooling, and related components.
  • Collaborate closely with controls, vision, and electrical teams to ensure mechanical designs integrate effectively within complex custom automation systems.
  • Provide technical leadership on projects by guiding other designers when needed and contributing to design standards and best practices.
  • Essential Skills
  • 5+ years of experience designing automated equipment for custom manufacturing applications.
  • 7+ years of direct experience designing automated equipment or machinery.
  • Proficiency in concept development, 3D design, and 2D detailing for manufacturing equipment, particularly punch and weld machinery, including geo fixtures, respot tooling, and end‑of‑arm tooling.
  • Advanced Solid Works experience for 3D modeling, mechanical design, and preparation of detailed engineering drawings.
  • Hands‑on experience in automation design for industrial and automotive manufacturing environments.
  • Strong background in mechanical design and mechanical engineering for custom machines and industrial equipment.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling and mechanical CAD workflows, including modeling and detailing complex assemblies.
  • Demonstrated experience designing equipment for automotive end‑users and automotive manufacturing applications.
  • Working knowledge and practical application of GD&T principles in manufacturing and assembly environments.
  • Ability to perform engineering calculations and select appropriate materials to meet performance and reliability requirements.
  • Experience in machine design, including welded structures and components for automated systems.
  • Ability to interpret customer specifications, engineering schematics, and technical data and translate them into robust mechanical designs.
