Job Title:
Development Engineer – HIL (Hardware-in-the-Loop)

Job Description

This role focuses on the development and integration of driveline Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) subsystems to support advanced automotive product development. You will create and maintain plant models and hardware that accurately represent driveline subsystems and vehicle controllers, including ABS, ESC, EPS, and ECUs. You will also integrate these driveline HIL subsystems and controllers into driving simulators, and develop standard operating procedures, tools, and methodologies that enhance the effectiveness and usability of HIL systems within a cutting-edge research and development environment.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and integrate driveline HIL subsystems based on the requirements of the product development team.
  • Create, maintain, and refine plant models and hardware that represent driveline subsystems and vehicle controllers such as ABS, ESC, EPS, and ECUs.
  • Integrate driveline HIL subsystems and vehicle controllers into driving simulators to support system-level testing and validation.
  • Develop standard operating procedures (SOPs), tools, and methodologies to improve HIL usage and integration with driving simulators.
  • Configure and manage HIL I/O mapping, electrical and wiring harness implementation, and troubleshoot related issues.
  • Use dSPACE (including Control Desk) hardware and software to configure, operate, and maintain HIL test benches.
  • Develop and execute HIL, MIL, and SIL test scenarios and scripts, including automated test scripts using Python and other scripting tools.
  • Perform validation and testing activities using CAN, CANFD, SPI, and LIN communication protocols.
  • Conduct ECU flashing and work with diagnostics protocols and tools such as UDS and CANoe.
  • Use Simulink and MATLAB to develop, update, and optimize HIL plant models for driveline and vehicle systems.
  • Systematically troubleshoot HIL simulation systems, including hardware, software, and communication interfaces.
  • Analyze test and simulation data, prepare clear reports, and present findings for management and cross-functional teams.
  • Collaborate effectively with other functional groups, including product development, controls, and systems engineering, to ensure alignment with project goals.
  • Support continuous improvement of HIL processes, tools, and methodologies to increase test coverage, efficiency, and reliability.
  • Contribute to the development and validation of powertrain, driveline, brake, and steering subsystems in an automotive environment.
  • Essential Skills

  • Master of Science degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Industrial, or Aerospace Engineering from an ABET-accredited or equivalent program.
  • 5+ years of work experience on HIL, MIL, and SIL projects.
  • At least 2 years of experience in HIL development, which may include university research project experience.
  • Hands-on experience with dSPACE hardware and software, including Control Desk, for HIL applications.
  • Experience with HIL I/O mapping, electrical and wiring harness implementation, and troubleshooting.
  • Strong knowledge of automotive communication protocols, including CAN, CANFD, SPI, and LIN.
  • Experience with ECU flashing and related tools and workflows.
  • Experience with diagnostics protocols and tools such as UDS and CANoe.
  • Proficiency in using Simulink and MATLAB to develop and maintain HIL plant models.
  • Proven ability to perform systematic troubleshooting on HIL simulation systems, including hardware and software components.
  • Experience in automotive testing, validation, and test script development.
  • Practical experience with Python for script writing and automation in test environments.
  • Solid understanding of hardware systems, batteries, and battery pack interfaces in the context of vehicle testing.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to coordinate and collaborate with cross-functional teams.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with a structured and analytical approach.
  • Strong data analytical skills and the ability to interpret and present data for management reviews.
  • Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in the automotive industry with powertrain systems, including internal combustion engines (ICE), electrification, and driveline.
  • Experience with brake and steering subsystems and controllers, such as ECU, ABS, ESP, and ESC.
  • Understanding of driveline theory and its practical application in vehicle systems.
  • Knowledge of vehicle ECUs and the interactions and interfaces among them.
  • Experience with tools such as PUMA, INCA, and ETAS-INCA for testing and calibration.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently while managing multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Good project planning and organizational skills to support complex engineering activities.
  • Proficient use of MS Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Interest in working in an advanced research and development environment focused on electric and hybrid vehicles.
  • Desire to grow within a long-term opportunity in a global automotive engineering…
