Description

About the Client:

We're seeking a compassionate caregiver for a 78-year-old woman living in Kingsville, Ontario with her husband. She has been diagnosed with dementia and experiences significant memory challenges, with her recall resetting approximately every 10 minutes. While she remains physically active and functional in daily activities, she experiences intense separation anxiety when her husband leaves the home, which can manifest as anger, suspicion, and jealousy.

She is fit, enjoys walking, and responds well to redirection and distraction techniques.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide companionship and supervision during visits to give the primary caregiver respite
  • Use redirection techniques to manage anxiety and prevent emotional outbursts
  • Engage the client in activities such as walks, art projects, or watching movies
  • Assist with medication reminders as needed
  • Maintain a calm, patient presence and build trust through consistent visits
  • Help the client feel comfortable and secure while her husband attends to personal activities like hockey or cycling
What We're Looking For:
  • Proven experience with dementia care, particularly managing behavioral challenges like separation anxiety and suspicion
  • Ability to use creative redirection strategies and maintain a therapeutic approach
  • Calm, patient demeanor with strong interpersonal skills
  • Understanding of memory care techniques and ability to work within the client's 10-minute recall loop
  • Reliable, consistent presence who can build familiarity and trust over time
  • Comfortable with a gradual introduction approach to establish rapport
Schedule:

Mon/Wed/Fri, 7:30pm-10:30pm. Consistency in scheduling is essential for both the client's routine and caregiver retention.

This position offers the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in supporting both a client with dementia and her devoted husband who needs respite. The ideal caregiver will be sophisticated in their approach, understanding that success requires patience, creativity, and the ability to make the client feel safe and engaged without triggering anxiety about her husband's absence.
