OverviewThe Windsor Police Department is hiring Police Officer Recruits for the POST-certified Basic Law Enforcement Academy. Successful completion grants Colorado POST certification and entry-level sworn status.

About the DepartmentThe department has six main divisions:
Community Engagement, Investigations, Patrol, Property & Evidence, Records, and Special Operations. It works to strengthen community relationships by recruiting individuals aligned with its vision of service excellence.
- Community Engagement – Establishes and fosters positive relationships within the community.
- Investigations – Conducts follow‑ups and prepares cases for appropriate clearance.
- Patrol – Keeps watch and responds to emergencies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- Property & Evidence – Maintains the integrity of evidence and/or property collected during a criminal investigation.
- Records – Gathers accurate crime data from officers, processes, maintains, and releases police records.
- Special Operations – Handles commercial vehicle inspections, Municipal Court security, and provides support at special events; also integral to the town’s traffic safety efforts.
Applicants must submit a cover letter and updated resume. The cover letter should highlight qualifications, relevant experience, and interest in the position. All applicants must successfully pass background, psychological, drug, medical, and physical screening to receive an offer.
Compensation$35.34 per hour (non‑exempt). Hourly wage continues during academy training, and recruits may enroll in municipal insurance plans.
Work ScheduleShift work with am or pm start, rotating days, and evening or weekend duties as schedule dictates.
Nature of WorkThis non‑sworn role supports the POST academy. Completion of the academy and Colorado POST certification enables transition to sworn, entry‑level Police Officer.
SupervisionDirect supervision is provided by the Police Professional Standards Unit Sergeant.
Essential Job Functions- Attend classroom activities and interact with students and faculty to earn passing grades.
- Complete classroom assignments and projects.
- Participate in physical activities to achieve a passing grade on the POST physical agility exam.
- Meet all requirements to obtain Colorado POST certification upon academy completion.
- Build and maintain positive relationships with colleagues, town employees, and the public.
- Perform related duties as required.
- Assist with special projects directly or indirectly related to essential job functions.
- Provide assistance to other departments/divisions as necessary.
- Participate in town employee committees, projects, or assignments as required.
- Perform other activities assigned by the Chief of Police, Police Commanders, or Professional Standards Unit Sergeant.
- Modern office procedures, methods, and computer equipment.
- English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
- Learn proper police procedures and methods.
- Analyze situations quickly and objectively.
- Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
- Operate standard equipment and facilities, including computers.
- Type at a reasonable speed necessary for job performance.
- Learn standard broadcasting procedures of a police radio system.
- Participate in strenuous physical activities with sufficient strength, endurance, and flexibility.
- Prepare accurate and grammatically correct written reports.
- Maintain effective working relationships in all interactions.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Successfully complete a POST-certified Basic Law Enforcement Academy.
