Para educator - River Street School (JOB # 13732)
Location: River Street School – Windsor, Connecticut
Type: Full‑time, 10‑month position (25/26 school year, with opportunities for extended‑day hours and a 6‑week summer program)
About the School: River Street School is a Student Services School where area public school districts refer students based on needed supports for IEP or 504 plan. The student population ranges from 5 to 21 years old, with the majority diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and requiring various supports.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist the special education teacher in classroom preparations and reinforce instructional materials and skills based on individual student needs.
- Implement behavior support plans, ensuring a safe and orderly classroom.
- Use everyday activities such as mealtimes and transitions as teaching opportunities.
- Accompany students on community outings, providing supervision and instruction.
- Maintain on‑task behavior throughout the school day.
- Follow all applicable safety rules, procedures, and policies as outlined in the handbook.
- Apply emergency interventions as prescribed by the Safety Care Curriculum and state regulations.
- Support therapy plans in behavior, speech, occupational, and physical therapy, including data collection.
- Utilize communication devices and techniques.
- Communicate effectively and appropriately with students, colleagues, and administration.
- Work effectively within a multidisciplinary team approach.
- Perform any other related duties as assigned.
Equipment: Use of standard office equipment, including computers, fax, and photocopiers.
Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards:
- Lift greater than 25 pounds.
- Move between kneeling and standing positions with ease and without outside support.
- Perform tasks requiring kneeling on one or both knees.
- Get up and down from the floor without assistance.
- Bend from the legs with ease.
- Shuffle quickly on feet (front to back, back to front, side to side).
- Work in standard office, school building, bus, or van environments.
- Work outdoors during student activities.
- Demonstrate proficiency in de‑escalation and restraint training (Safety Care).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Follow instructions provided in written or oral form.
- Work with a diverse group of individuals.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding students, employees, and others.
- Build supportive and compassionate relationships with students with special needs.
- Establish cooperative working relationships with parents and staff.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Requirements:
- At least 18 years of age with a high school diploma.
- Strong interest in learning to work with students with disabilities.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Currently pursuing a 4‑year degree in psychology, education, speech pathology, or related field.
- At least 2 years of experience working with a diverse population of individuals with disabilities.
- Experience in human services or providing direct care.
- Ability to pass a two‑day Safety Care training program without restrictions.
