The Building Official is a full-time position with the Town of Windsor. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in enforcing the Town’s building, zoning, and safety codes while contributing to the development and character of our community.

Hiring range: $102,000 - $115,000 DOQ with up to 5% at six months.

As a member of our Development Services Team
, you will work alongside a dynamic group of professionals—including a staff of four within the Building Department and partners such as the Fire Marshal’s Office—to ensure the safe and responsible growth of the town.

About

The Role

The Building Official is responsible for enforcing all building-related codes and regulations, including:

  • State of Connecticut Building Code
  • Local ordinances such as zoning, grading, filling, nuisance abatement, and fire sprinkler/ fire safety code amendments.
Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct on-site inspections of construction projects (e.g., footings, foundations, framing, electrical, plumbing, mechanical systems)
  • Issue correction notices and citations for code violations
  • Interpret, explain, and provide guidance on codes and regulations to developers, architects, engineers, and contractors
  • Lead, train, and evaluate Building Department staff
  • Plan and organize workloads and assignments
  • Prepare and manage, along with Fire Marshal, the Building and Safety Department’s annual budget, ensuring efficient use of resources

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required;
    Associate’s degree is preferred
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience preferably as an Assistant Building Official or Building Inspector
  • At least four (4) years of experience in building construction, design, inspection, and staff supervision—preferably within a municipal building inspection environment
  • Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
Special Requirements
  • Successful completion of the town’s pre-employment background and drug screening process – includes screening for marijuana
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Comprehensive understanding of the Connecticut State Building Codes
  • Strong knowledge of building materials, construction methods, and fire prevention practices
  • Familiarity with plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems installation and inspection
  • Solid grasp of standards related to lighting, ventilation, and safe egress in building design
  • Proficient in carpentry and cement work; able to apply building codes, zoning regulations, and land use policies effectively
  • Skilled in interpreting blueprints, architectural drawings, and technical specifications
  • Capable of conducting inspections at various project stages to ensure compliance
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; able to collaborate with contractors, colleagues, and the public
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, Outlook), Internet usage, and permitting or inspection-related software
  • Valid driver’s license with a good driving record
