Director Specialty and Large Loss Claims

Scope of Claims
  • Specialty Claims:
    Directors & Officers (D&O), Errors & Omissions (E&O), Employment Practices Liability, Professional Liability (Miscellaneous, Architects & Engineers, Lawyers, Accountants).
  • Large Loss Claims:
    Complex claims exceeding $1 million, including general liability, auto, construction defect and excess & surplus (E&S) cases.
Position Overview

Manage a multi‑team specialty and large loss claim department. Multiple managers will report directly. The role requires technical proficiency in specialty and large loss claims, strong business acumen, reporting oversight, and participation in enterprise‑wide projects.

In This Role You Will
  • Drive work‑product quality, including file‑review performance, financial analysis, ad hoc reporting.
  • Provide coaching, feedback, and take corrective action as needed.
  • Oversee expense management and adhere to established reserve and settlement authority limits.
  • Build relationships with internal and external customers, analyze data and policy language, and support agency relationships.
  • Serve as an expert resource for direct reports, other teams, business units and claims leadership.
  • Lead or participate in initiatives targeting claims strategy and financial goals.
  • Assess present and future resource needs, mentor managers, and sustain a high‑performing workforce.
Talent / Performance Management
  • Develop leaders and promote succession planning.
  • Participate in hiring of claim personnel, staffing recommendations and ideal candidate identification.
  • Handle disciplinary actions up to termination.
  • Authorise technical and industry training opportunities.
  • Direct performance management: cascade goals, provide and receive feedback, conduct reviews, address performance issues, and implement development plans.
  • Recommend salary administration linked to individual performance.
  • Oversee daily resources, workflow and processes.
What You Need to Apply
  • MBA or Juris Doctor preferred with at least 7 years of related management experience, including leading other leaders.
  • Effective problem solver who anticipates issues and proposes solutions.
  • Proactive customer‑focused mindset.
  • Proven ability to hire and develop talent.
  • Strong multitasking and prioritization skills.
  • Creative use of systems, people and other resources.
  • Excellent people‑management and coaching skills.
  • Technical knowledge of complex specialty or related claims.
  • Excellent communicator, able to drive results.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and vendor software.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Use of personal computer and standard office equipment.
  • Sitting and/or standing for extended periods.
  • Required on‑site work as needed.
  • Travel as necessary.
  • Work more than 40 hours per week when required.
  • Work in a fast‑paced, changing or stressful environment.
  • Ability to perform in a noisy/loud environment.
