DEFINITION AND
PURPOSE:
This position is responsible for the operation, maintenance, repair, and minor construction of the Village’s municipal water production and distribution systems, with secondary duties in sewer collection, streets, storm drainage, snow operations, and other public works functions.
Key responsibilities include the skilled and technical operation and maintenance of water pumping facilities, remote well sites, water distribution systems, and water storage tanks. The role also involves daily oversight of water wells, high-service pumps, distribution mains, service lines, hydrants, valves, meters, and related equipment to ensure the safe and efficient delivery of potable water.
This is a non-supervisory position reporting directly to the Public Works Director. While the primary focus is on water system operations, the position also assists with general public works tasks as needed.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Inspect, maintain, and monitor pumps, filters, and chlorine level; maintain, repair, and replace valves, hydrants, and meters; adjust water pumping equipment as necessary.
- Maintain compliance with Illinois Environmental Protection Agency standards; take daily chlorine and samples for water quality to meet all IEPA drinking water standards; prepare data for incorporation into the IEPA Monthly Operating Report.
- Operate and maintain emergency back-up wells, water pumps, and filtration equipment.
- Investigate complaints regarding water quality; repair water mains and water service leaks; operate a backhoe and other vehicles and equipment used in the operation and maintenance of the underground water distribution system and sanitary sewer collection systems.
- Utilize the water system Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system to monitor pressures, water storage levels, alarms, etc.
- Install and maintain water meters; repair and replace faulty meters; assist in meter reading, as necessary.
- Locate underground water and sanitary sewer main and service lines; respond to J.U.L.I.E. locate requests.
- Flush, maintain, and repair fire hydrants.
- Perform various maintenance tasks at remote well sites.
- Observe pressure tests and collect samples for new water main installations.
- Restore roadways and parkways after maintenance and repair activities.
- Perform other public works maintenance activities such as snow plowing, truck driving, and related work as needed; does preventive maintenance on city vehicles and equipment.
- Provide professional, effective, and efficient customer services; promote and maintain responsive and positive community relations.
- Train and assist other staff with water meter repair, installation, and related water service tasks (turn-ons/turn-offs, taps, etc.).
- Participate in the construction, maintenance, and repair of streets, storm drainage, and sewer systems.
- Operate light to heavy equipment and power tools in support of water, sewer, street, and storm maintenance activities.
- Perform tasks such as asphalt patching, concrete work, debris removal, snow and ice control, and right-of-way maintenance.
- Ensure proper traffic control and safety measures at work sites.
- Perform other duties as required.
REQUIREMENTS:
Experience
A minimum of three years’ experience in public works and/or utilities operations work is required.
Education
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Vocational training in sewer and wastewater preferred.
