Security Officer I Full-time Nights at Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital
Salary: $20.00 - $28.00 per hour. Placement within the salary range depends on experience and internal equity.

The Security Officer I reflects the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Medicine. This role adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulatory standards. Under the direction of the Security Leadership, the officer protects the hospital from theft and damage, safeguards patients, visitors, associates, and medical staff, investigates and quells disturbances, and restrains patients with proper direction and assistance from medical/clinical staff.
Responsibilities- Investigates and quells hospital incidents and disturbances to maintain security.
- Completes descriptive reports for supervisory personnel.
- Notifies appropriate city officials (police and fire) when necessary.
- Performs regular perimeter and internal patrols of hospital buildings and grounds.
- Conducts investigations into incidents of hazardous conditions, theft, criminal activity, and other security or safety issues.
- Monitors the access control system, fire and duress alarms, and the security video system.
- Controls traffic to assure access for emergency vehicles, patients, and visitors.
- Maintains security of restricted areas by checking and locking doors according to schedules or special circumstances.
- Provides escorts for staff to their vehicles as requested.
- Delivers deceased bodies to the morgue and releases them to authorized persons in accordance with policies.
- Responds to all emergency codes in accordance with departmental guidelines.
- Alerts the department manager of any activities or deviations requiring disciplinary action or follow-up.
- Enforces all hospital policies and procedures as directed.
- Displays a competent and professional service image while remaining approachable and service‑mindful.
- Encourages people to freely ask for assistance or convey information that may prevent problems or reduce exposure to damage or loss.
- Conducts contraband searches for patient and employee safety as needed.
- Monitors individuals or situations to ensure patient and employee safety.
- Oversees the staff parking permit process and monitors compliance.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required:
- High‑school diploma or GED.
- Successful completion of IAHSS Basic exam within 90 days of hire.
- Maintain IAHSS Basic certification.
- Current Basic Life Support certification through American Heart Association within 9 months of hire.
- Successful completion of Northwestern Medicine Defensive Tactics in Healthcare within 6 months of hire.
- Interpersonal and communication skills to interact effectively with employees, medical staff, patients, visitors, law enforcement and other agencies.
- Writing skills necessary to complete reports and paperwork that meet departmental standards.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Physical ability and knowledge of operating a motor vehicle.
- Physical Demands: lift/carry up to 65 pounds, push/pull up to 75 pounds, stand and walk during most shifts, respond quickly to emergency situations, lift and assist with heavy objects occasionally.
Preferred:
- Experience in healthcare security, police work, or military service.
- Valid FOID card.
- Associate or Bachelor’s degree.
