Role

Summary:

The Accountant – Pension & Benefit Plans supports the financial reporting, accounting operations, tax reporting, reconciliations, and internal control framework for the WCEBP pension and benefit plans and related entities.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare quarterly (ERBA, LTD Plan) and monthly (investment subsidiaries) financial statements, and annual audited statements with year‑end working papers.
  • Ensure accounting methods and financial disclosures comply with Canadian GAAP and prepare government and tax filings.
  • Maintain general ledgers and financial records for ERBA, LTD Plan and subsidiaries, ensuring accurate internal controls.
  • Assist the Manager, Finance with accounting systems, and prepare analysis as required.
  • Co‑sign cheques as a designated signing authority; prepare capital call and distribution letters for subsidiaries.
  • Manage cash resources for all investment operations, determine monthly transfers between Pension Plans, and prepare quarterly statements of LTD benefits to employers.
  • Prepare all tax and GST returns for subsidiaries; facilitate year‑end tax reporting, T4A adjustments, tax letters, and NR4 filings.
  • Prepare Tax Adjustment Notes to the City, review and prepare pension adjustment reversals, audit working papers, and reconciliations of contributions.
  • Coach, mentor and supervise one Finance staff; review operational activities including payroll, credit memos, cash payers, and over payment reconciliations.
  • Foster a culture of professionalism, collaboration, and continuous improvement within the Finance team; support Risk Management as needed.
Qualifications
  • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation in good standing.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Commerce, Business Administration or related discipline.
  • 3‑5 years of experience with GAAP, guidelines, and regulations; full set of accounting records and financial statements.
  • Strong knowledge of financial records and systems; analytical and mathematical skills including present‑value concepts.
  • Effective oral and written communication with senior management, auditors, investment managers, plan members and custodians.
  • Proficient in Excel, Word and accounting systems.
  • Ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines.
  • Experience supervising and coaching staff.
  • Within 12 months, acquire detailed knowledge of pension and disability plans, Pension Benefits Act (Manitoba) and relevant Income Tax Act provisions.
  • For foreign‑educated applicants, provide an official assessment report from a recognised Canadian assessment service.
Conditions of Employment
  • Maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada; work permit holders must keep permit valid.
  • Provide a satisfactory Police Information Check at own expense.
  • Undergo proficiency testing and, if requested, additional training or certificates.
Hours of Work

8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. (35 hours/week); eligibility for flex‑time after six months.
