Position Overview
This position reports to the Shared Health Indigenous Health Manager and primarily provides program support to the Indigenous Health team at Health Sciences Centre. The Indigenous Health (IH) Administrative Assistant provides comprehensive administrative support to Indigenous Health programs and services at Health Sciences Centre (HSC). This role contributes to the efficient delivery of patient and family centred, culturally safe and trauma informed care while upholding Indigenous ways of knowing, being and doing.
The Indigenous Health Administrative Assistant will also support daily operations through effective communication, data management, document preparation, and coordination of information across internal teams and external partners.
The position is responsible for triaging inquiries from patients, visitors, staff, and partners. The IH Administrative Assistant is integral in supporting the referral process, facilitating communication with external agencies, and ensuring timely information flow to program leadership.
This position contributes to building a culturally safe, respectful and trauma‑informed workplace, while upholding Indigenous ways of knowing, being and doing, as well as recognizing the impacts of intergenerational trauma and inequities in access to health for Indigenous peoples.

Experience- Five (5) years of direct related experience is preferred.
- Experience and knowledge of Manitoba’s public health care system and services.
- Experience in providing Indigenous patient and family on‑site support.
- Lived experience and understanding of Indigenous healthcare priorities, services, and challenges alongside Indigenous culture, protocols, traditions, and values, both within communities and organizations in Manitoba.
- Proficient in written and verbal communication and collaboration. Skilled in developing and presenting findings to varied audiences.
- Experience scheduling and coordinating meetings required.
- Experience recording and preparing minutes and agendas.
- Experience maintaining spreadsheets and databases.
- Experience typing a minimum of 65 words per minute.
- High school diploma, Graduate Education Diploma (GED), or Canadian Adult Education Credential (CAEC).
- Education in Indigenous relations, coaching and trauma‑informed care and/or similar field an asset.
- Completion of Indigenous cultural safety and anti‑racism training.
- Formal training in applied office skills is required, preferred.

Qualifications And Skills- Demonstrated ability to relate effectively to a variety of people from diverse backgrounds.
- Knowledge or familiarity with Indigenous health issues, population health, and health status of citizens of Manitoba.
- Knowledge of the Manitoba health care system, federal health care system, provincial and federal governance, and leadership models.
- Knowledge in trauma‑informed practice, cultural safety and recognizing impacts of inequitable access to healthcare for Indigenous people.
- Knowledge of Indigenous languages and Indigenous ways of knowing is an asset.
- Strong and culturally relevant communication, interpersonal, analytical, organizational, and leadership skills.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Canadian colonial impacts on Indigenous people in social and health contexts.
- Knowledge and appreciation of the unique history, cultures, and rights of Indigenous Peoples in Canada is required.
- Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action (2015) and Manitoba’s Path to Reconciliation Act (2016).
- Understanding and commitment to the articles set out in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) as a framework for reconciliation.
