Position: Paddling Instructor (Seasonal)

Overview

Job Title: Paddling Instructor (Seasonal)

Hours of Work: Weekdays (May and June), Evenings (July and August), part-time

Job Summary

Paddling Instructors lead the Fort Whyte Alive (FWA) paddling programming. They greet, welcome, take numbers, and accept signed waivers that participants provide on arrival. Instructors equip participants with appropriate PFDs, paddles, and boats, return the same to orderly fashion after use, and are responsible for the condition of equipment before and after the program. They provide instruction in basic canoeing and kayaking per the FWA Paddling Program manual and general paddling orientation to participants including safety, technique as well as supervising paddling participants on the water.

Paddling Instructors will deliver paddling programming at FWA to school groups during the week in May and June.

In July and August Paddling Instructors will work with the general public and play a leading role in Tuesday and Thursday evening Paddle Nights, including welcoming participants, providing supervision for volunteers and ensuring safety protocols are followed, and equipment is managed in a safe way.

Job Duties
  • Ensure equipment and instruction area is ready for groups
  • Be responsible for safe and appropriate use PFDs, paddles, and boats
  • Provide instruction in basic canoeing and kayaking
  • Act as host for school or public programs
  • Contact senior FWA staff if any urgent issues occur during a program
  • Make note of minor issues if they occur during a program and report them to senior staff
  • Ensure equipment is stowed and clean after programs
  • Responsible for scene management as emergency procedures outlined in FWA Staff Manual and the Paddling Manual
  • Other duties as necessary
Training and Support

Instructors will receive ongoing training in use and maintenance of all equipment, as well as the equivalent of 1.5 hrs. role specific training on paddling procedures, and ongoing staff support as necessary. Emergency contact information will be given to instructors prior to the beginning of the term.
