The opportunity
The University of Manitoba is looking for a Truth & Reconciliation Coordinator. This position leads the implementation of the Faculty’s Truth & Reconciliation Action Plan by collaborating with internal partners and Indigenous communities to advance Indigenization across agriculture, food, and nutrition disciplines. This role develops and delivers culturally responsive educational programming, including workshops, policies, and frameworks that integrate Indigenous knowledge and perspectives.
The Coordinator organizes and oversees cultural and ceremonial events, supports the Elder‑in‑Residence, and maintains Indigenous cultural spaces to strengthen relationships with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities. They also champion Indigenous student recruitment and retention through targeted outreach, multi‑pathway programs, and initiatives that promote inclusive practices and increased Indigenous representation.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include managing a digital repository of Indigenization efforts, preparing budgets and funding proposals, reporting on Action Plan progress, and serving on Faculty committees. This multifaceted role requires strong leadership, cultural competence, and a deep commitment to fostering respectful, inclusive, and transformative learning environments.
The qualifications and experience we’re looking for
THIS POSITION IS DESIGNATED FOR INDIGENOUS CANDIDATES. APPLICANTS MUST SELF-DECLARE ON THEIR COVER LETTER/RESUME AS INDIGENOUS (FIRST NATION, METIS AND INUIT)
Undergraduate degree in a related discipline is required
Valid driver's license and access to vehicle is required
Two years of experience working with Indigenous Elders, Knowledge Keepers, or Cultural Specialists is required
Experience in a First Nations, Métis or Inuit setting is required
Experience in Indigenous ceremony and cultural practices is required
Proven experience working within the Indigenous communities with culturally respectful protocols required
Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous cultures, colonization, socio-economic issues, and the importance of self-determination required
Knowledge of food systems preferred
Knowledge of Indigenous programs at University of Manitoba and within community is preferred
Experience working with Indigenous community governance and facilitating Indigenous community programming preferred
Experience with student/faculty development, Indigenous knowledge and education, educational programming and program development is preferred
Experience employing Indigenous ways of knowing into administrative activities preferred
Previous administrative experience in an academic setting is preferred
Knowledge and understanding of the historical perspective of Indigenous peoples in Canada and the effects of the colonial process and its relevance to Agriculture and land is preferred
An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
Excellent verbal and written communication skills required
Problem solving and conflict resolution skills required
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and digital communication tools (e.g., virtual meeting software, website content management systems) required
Proficient in multi-tasking in order to meet competing deadlines required
