The Department of Microbiology invites applications for a full-time tenure-track or tenured position at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank, commencing no later than June 11, 2027. Salary and rank will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. Exceptional candidates will be considered with the responsibilities and qualifications outlined below.
The Department seeks an emerging scholar committed to excellence in research and teaching. The successful candidate will have demonstrated expertise and demonstrated interest in applied vaccinology or the development of therapeutic biologics. The focus should be on human and zoonotic viral pathogens, thereby leading to improvements in human health, pandemic preparedness. Applicants whose research could benefit, either through direct use or collaboration, from structural biology methods, including cryo-EM and/or X-ray crystallography, are encouraged to apply.
To support Canadian pandemic preparedness research and development, the University of Manitoba Faculty of Science is developing a new 21,000 sq. ft. facility for vaccine and biologics R&D and pre-clinical biomanufacturing with funding from the Canadian Biosciences Research Infrastructure Fund. Construction has commenced and is expected to be completed by 2029. The successful candidate is expected to establish and maintain an externally funded research program.
Future collaborations with the Price Faculty of Engineering to scale production of successful vaccine or biologics design are possible. They will also have the opportunity to engage with UM experts in protein biochemistry, and structural biology (Cryo-EM and X-ray), biophysics, microbiology, and virology in the Faculty of Science.
In addition to the above research interests and expertise, the successful candidate will have a PhD and postdoctoral or other distinguishing experience in Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Virology, Biosystems Engineering or related fields. They will have a track record of high quality scholarly research leading to peer-assessed publications; demonstrate or show strong potential to establish and sustain an independent, innovative, externally fundable research program;
have demonstrated strength or strong potential for outstanding teaching contributions; and exhibit evidence of the ability to work in a collaborative environment.
Duties will include teaching introductory biochemistry and teaching in the applicant’s area of interest; graduate teaching and supervision; research, including the establishment of an externally funded research program; and service activities.
