THE POSITIONThe Mechanical Design Engineer Co-op Student will support the development of innovative, multidisciplinary products that incorporate plastics, metals, optics, and electromechanical components and mechanisms. Working alongside experienced engineers, you’ll contribute to the process of mechanical design through prototyping and production support. This is a hands‑on role that blends creativity, technical learning, and real‑world problem solving in a fast‑paced, collaborative environment.
How You Will Be Making An Impact- Support the design and development of mechanical components and assemblies for complex devices.
- Create and update 3D CAD models and 2D drawings using Solid Works.
- Design and build test jigs, fixtures, and custom setups to support prototyping, testing, and validation activities.
- Support hands‑on prototyping, assembly, and iteration of mechanical prototypes.
- Execute testing and validation activities in the onsite lab, including data collection, troubleshooting, and documenting findings.
- Participate in design reviews and contribute ideas to improve functionality, reliability, and manufacturability.
- Assist with documentation and preparation for product transfer to manufacturing.
- Produce accurate CAD models and drawings with guidance from senior engineers
- Apply sound engineering fundamentals and design best practices in prototyping, testing, and validation
- Learn and follow established development, laboratory, and documentation processes
- Demonstrate confidence and competency in building fixtures, executing tests, and reporting results.
- Contribute effectively in team meetings, design reviews, and prototype evaluations.
- Show curiosity, initiative, and a willingness to learn in both hands‑on and design tasks.
- Complete assigned tasks on time and communicate progress clearly.
- Support efficient prototyping cycles, robust testing, and smooth transition of validated designs to manufacturing.
- Currently enrolled in a BSc. in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering program.
- Completed coursework in mechanical design, materials, and manufacturing processes.
- Experience with Solid Works or similar CAD software (academic or project-based).
- Basic understanding of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple tasks.
- Comfortable working independently and in a collaborative team environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Hands‑on experience with prototyping, testing, lab work, jigs/fixtures, or fabrication tools is an asset.
