The Role

The Field Engineer will be primarily responsible for on-site field and construction support activities for geotechnical and heavy civil projects. This role involves extensive outdoor work on active construction sites and geotechnical investigations in a wide range of soil and rock conditions.

The position is based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, with regular travel to sites across the province and Canada, including remote and northern locations. Assignments may involve short-term travel or longer site rotations depending on project needs. The successful candidate will gain hands‑on experience supporting construction, investigations, and monitoring activities while working closely with senior engineers, technologists, contractors, and clients.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Perform field-based construction inspections for projects involving dams, dikes, canals, water control structures, spillways, closed mines, trenchless conduit installations, rock support. Projects will generally be earthworks construction but could be multi-disciplinary including concrete and steel construction.
  • Be familiar with quality control and quality assurance procedures including material sampling and testing. Perform compaction testing using nuclear densometer, and sampling soil and earth materials and concrete for laboratory testing (by others).
  • Measure and record construction quantities to reconcile contractor monthly progress estimates.
  • Able to understand and implement construction drawings, specifications and other contract documentation, and ensure construction projects are completed in accordance with those documents.
  • Prepare and enforce construction documents such as field instructions, requests for information (RFI’s), proposed change notices, etc.
  • Inspect and monitor earthworks, subgrade preparation, foundations, and other construction activities to ensure compliance with project drawings and specifications.
  • Observing, logging, and documenting soil and groundwater conditions, construction progress, and site activities through detailed field notes, reports, and photographs.
  • Prepare daily construction reports to be issued to the office at the end of each day.
  • Installing, monitoring, and collecting data from geotechnical instrumentation such as inclinometers and piezometers.
  • Working closely with Engineers, Technologists, Contractors, Owners, and regulatory agencies to identify field issues and develop practical, constructible solutions.
  • Supporting construction administration activities, including coordination of subcontractors and site services, review of shop drawings and contractor submittals, tracking project documentation, and assisting with progress claims and contract changes.
  • Assisting with preparation of technical deliverables, proposals, and field documents.
  • Support survey crews and/or develop independent survey skills as required.
  • Participating in emergency response, failure investigations, and other rapid-response field assignments as required.
About You
  • Bachelor’s degree (B.Sc.) in Civil Engineering from a recognized university (or equivalent technical background with strong field experience)
