Position Overview:

Under the general direction of the Customer Service Design Engineer, the Distribution Design Engineer is responsible for working with a team of highly skilled technical support staff to design overhead and underground additions and modifications to the electrical distribution systems for 66kV and below. The Distribution Design Engineer will be responsible for the review and sealing of design drawings and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to ensure compliance with Manitoba Hydro Standards and that customer needs are met in a safe and cost-effective manner.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide engineering design support and technical direction for overhead and underground residential, commercial, and street lighting projects within Eastern Manitoba to ensure that safety, compliance with standards, and cost efficiency are met.
  • Assume professional responsibility for, as well as supervise the preparation of design packages (construction drawings, bills of material and cost estimates) for distribution design projects. Monitor and report on project scheduling.
  • Liaise with representatives internal and external to Manitoba Hydro to meet customers' needs in terms of electrical capacity, location of plant, and schedule.
  • Prepare and evaluate alternatives for complex electrical distribution additions and modifications.
  • Ensure that recommendations contained in planning and protection reports are implemented in design packages issued for construction.
  • Perform field checks and review completed as-built work orders for technical compliance.
  • Recommend and facilitate the development of new and existing electrical distribution design software applications used by the department.
  • Instruct at Manitoba Hydro Training and Development Programs as required.
Qualifications:
  • Graduate in Engineering from a recognized University with a minimum of six years related experience, and a broad knowledge of electrical distribution systems. Preference will be for candidates with Electrical Engineering, however consideration will be given to other disciplines. Consideration will also be given to candidates with less than six years related experience.
  • Professional member in good standing with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba Registered (or willingness and ability to attain within a specified amount of time).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Manitoba Hydro 66kV and Below Distribution Standards.
  • Good understanding of construction methods, equipment, and materials used in electrical distribution.
  • Good understanding of Customer Policy Application.
  • Demonstrated ability in report writing and in preparing and making oral presentations.
  • Capable of devising new methods or modifying standard principles or practices to new or changing conditions.
  • Good knowledge of Corporation policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Must be enthusiastic and display initiative in resolving complex and adverse technical problems.
  • Possess a valid Class 5 Province of Manitoba Driver's Licence.
Salary Range

Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The range for the classification is $48.74-$67.29 Hourly, $93,398.24-$ Annually.
