Overview

AtkinsRéalis seeks an experienced Project Engineering Manager to lead engineering activities for a Heavy Water (D₂O) Production and Processing Facility supporting CANDU nuclear power generation. The role provides technical and managerial leadership across all engineering disciplines to ensure safe, reliable, and compliant plant design consistent with Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) and regulatory requirements.

The Project Engineering Manager will join the Engineering Management practice within the Technical Professional Organization (TPO) of Engineering Services Canada and play a lead role in delivering Engineering Services on large and complex projects (generally Class 3, 4 &
5). Reporting to the Director of Operations, the manager will contribute to the team’s strategy and oversee the successful execution of the engineering design of large, multi‑disciplinary projects from inception to completion.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with Win Work and Market Lead to define proposal timelines, deliverables and efforts, ensuring alignment with client requirements and overall business objectives.
  • Collaborate with Project Delivery team to define project goals, timelines and deliverables, ensuring alignment with client requirements and overall business objectives during the planning and execution phases.
  • Oversee the engineering project lifecycle, including design, development, testing and implementation, while managing technical risk and resources effectively.
  • Oversee the Project Design Execution Plan and inter‑disciplinary technical coordination. Ensure effort estimates, schedule, deliverables and obligations associated with the scope of work are fully understood, identified, adhered to and monitored.
  • Prepare and submit project monthly reporting to the Engineering Management Director responsible for a Market.
  • Provide overall engineering leadership for the heavy water plant design team and coordinate multidisciplinary engineering teams including civil/structural, architectural, geotechnical, environmental, process, mechanical, piping, electrical, instrumentation & control (I&C;) and communication.
  • Provide technical guidance and expertise to the engineering team, ensuring the use of industry best practices and standards and promoting continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Conduct regular reviews and quality assessments of engineering deliverables, ensuring compliance with project requirements, specifications and quality standards.
  • Promote a Value Engineering culture throughout the project life cycle. Ensure all engineering activities comply with Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) requirements and applicable CSA nuclear standards.
  • Collaborate closely with internal and external stakeholders, including clients, architects, vendors, contractors and regulatory authorities, to ensure project success.
  • Engage in effective communication, providing regular engineering updates, addressing concerns and managing expectations to foster strong client relationships.
  • Actively participate in meetings, presentations and technical discussions, representing the engineering team and providing expert insights and recommendations.
About You
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in engineering or a related field with 10+ years of experience in a relevant field.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in engineering management, overseeing complex engineering projects and leading multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to obtain relevant professional designation (P.Eng.) in multiple jurisdictions across Canada.
  • Proven experience delivering multi‑discipline engineering for Balance of Plant (BOP) systems including utilities, buildings, water treatment, HVAC, electrical distribution, control systems and site infrastructure in nuclear, industrial or renewable energy facilities.
  • Understanding of large‑scale chemical separation processes; thermal‑hydraulic systems, process safety & hazard management, instrumentation & control for complex processes and environmental & effluent management.
  • Experience in the integration of process systems into the infrastructure design is an asset.
