The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority is seeking a motivated Physician Assistant/Clinical Assistant for a full-time position in the Child Health Program at the Children’s Hospital, Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg MB. The successful applicant will work within the Section of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine.
ResponsibilitiesThe Physician/Clinical Assistant will practice in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and will work closely and alongside the Pediatric Intensivists. The PICU is a teaching unit, with residents from the Pediatric, Emergency Medicine and Anesthesia Residency programs. Medical students also rotate through the PICU electively.
The aim of the Pediatric Critical Care Program is to have a training program for both Physician and Clinical Assistants to gain knowledge in both pediatric medicine and critical care medicine. Training will occur during scheduled shifts, primarily daytime shifts. The positions include day and night shifts. The aim is to have one Physician/Clinical Assistant working every day-time, and every night-time shift, to augment the medical coverage in the PICU as well as to support the residents.
Physician/Clinical Assistants will be trained to perform procedures such as intubation, arterial line insertion, central line insertion and lumbar punctures. They will also undergo training on resuscitation of a critically ill child and may participate in Code Blue responses.
The Physician/Clinical Assistant will be required to perform, order, and interpret diagnostic, therapeutic investigations/interventions. Duties of this position will include performing history and physical exams in a variety of settings that could include the Emergency Department and in the PICU, and managing patients admitted to the PICU. PA/ClAs also participate in certain inpatient-related projects and provide valued input on committees. PA/CIAs after training and some experience will become valued educators to trainees and other staff in the PICU.
Physician/Clinical Assistants will be required to attend clinical and educational rounds as able. Administrative requirements will include standard of practice recordings of all patient encounters; these methods may require dictating or utilizing electronic medical records where/when available. Assistants must be able to communicate effectively in English with other members of interdisciplinary healthcare teams.

Salary will commensurate with experience and qualifications and is accompanied by a benefits package.
Qualifications- Must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba as a Physician Assistant or Clinical Assistant.
- Must be eligible for a Medical Staff Appointment.
- Prior experience preferred.
- Candidates must be a graduate of a Physician Assistant Educational Program acceptable to CPSM.
Clinical Assistants:
- Must be a graduate of an accredited Medical School in Canada or abroad.
- Must have at least one of the following:
- Clinical Assistant Assessment
- NAC OSCE
- LMCC
