Job Summary:
Participates in the collection, abstraction, utilization and analysis of complex medical data for the Provincial Cancer Registry. Accurately encodes all related cancer data from cytology, pathology, including electronic pathology feeds, autopsy reports, report of malignant neoplasms, admission/separation data from the provincial hospital abstracting system, vital statistics death listings, hospital and clinic charts to be recorded in the computerized cancer registry data base.
Performs edits and quality checks on data.
The Cancer Registrar I position performs a variety of roles including Pathology processing, Admission & Separation process, Vital Statistics processing, Consults/Referral form processing, Non-reportable disease coding, and entering “pending” diagnosis for rapid case ascertainment.
Qualifications Required Level of Formal Education & Experience- Health Information Management (2 year diploma), or equivalent health information course.
- Microsoft Office course required (Access, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint).
- Experience with ICD-10 (International Classification of Diseases, 10th Edition) and CCI (Canadian Classification of Health Interventions) coding required.
- Experience working in a Cancer Registry preferred.
- Knowledge of ICD-O (International Classification of Diseases for Oncology) preferred.
- SEER (Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results Program) Multiple Primary and Histology and/or Solid Tumor Rules coding rules an asset.
- Experience in MAXON (+) computer system an asset. Experience in Varian Medical Systems Manager an asset.
- Experience in Enterprise Viewer/Client Registry software an asset.
- Excellent oral/written communication and organizational skills
- Must have satisfactory employment record
- Must be legally able to work in Canada
