Reporting to the Manager, Systems & Data Architecture, the Data Architect is responsible for capturing, designing, and implementing the architecture of scalable, secure data ecosystems that align with the Corporation’s technology and business strategy. This role involves making decisions on information-related principles, services, standards, and guidelines to enhance the organization's management and care of data. The Data Architect also stays current with emerging data technologies and industry trends to proactively enhance the organization's data architecture and overall data management capabilities.

The Data Architect provides leadership and guidance in the area of data to business and technical architects, senior system analysts, and team leads for the development and delivery of data-related changes within projects. This position defines the data structure and elements to support applications and services used by the business processes of the organization, focusing on the integrity, organization, and usability of data.

Additionally, the Data Architect collaborates with stakeholders to ensure robust data solutions, optimizes performance, plans migrations, and supports strategic decision‑making.

Responsibilities
  • Leads or participates in project teams responsible for the design, construction and implementation of business data solutions for structured and unstructured data.
  • Works with business stakeholders to provide Data Governance where Data Governance consists of the processes, standards, methods, tools and technologies to ensure that data and data structures are of high quality, reliable and unique (not duplicated).
  • Directs and/or conducts the design and development of business information requirements to deliver stable data structures.
  • Inventories data by gathering facts about the characteristics, quantity and location of organizational data and manages these facts in a data dictionary or repository.
  • Provides guidance and assistance for the development of standard methods of data access and manipulation and the use of common enterprise information models by projects.
  • Participates in the identification and masking of personally identifiable information (PII) and personal health information (PHI) data in non-production environments.
  • Promotes joint sponsorship, custodianship and sharing of data across organizational and project boundaries while resolving and/or preventing conflicts in ownership, usage interpretation and meaning of data.
  • Works with business stakeholders to establish an understanding of the business and determine the technology and/or data needs of the business.
  • Determines the range of solutions to fit the business needs and describes optimal solutions in terms of cost effectiveness, scalability, security and future positioning which are aligned with the Corporation’s overall technology strategy and consistent with MPI’s technology environment.
  • Facilitates effective communication between business stakeholder and technology resources.   • Validates technology solutions prior to implementation to ensure that the solutions are stable, integrate properly with MPI’s existing technology footprint and fulfils their intended function. Describes and coordinates modifications as required.
  • Develops plans which will facilitate business continuity and rapid recovery in the event of technology failure.
  • Documents the technology solutions according to the Corporation’s policies and practices, including models and other architecture documents.
  • Participates in development of enterprise architecture and technology road maps.
  • Ensures that all activities adhere to corporate architectural principles, standards and processes, unless an exemption has been granted.
  • Ensures that the architecture supports the corporation in achieving its strategic goals.
