Job DescriptionBasic function: The Assistant Caretaker is responsible for the routine cleaning, comfort and safety of the school’s physical facilities. The Assistant Caretaker provides assistance to the Head Caretaker with the physical activities of operating the school building.
Working relationship: The Assistant Caretaker reports to the Head Caretaker in charge of the school. In the absence of the Head Caretaker, the Assistant Caretaker accepts direction from the Caretaker 1 and/or Principal. The Assistant Caretaker also accepts direction from the evening Custodial Co-ordinator. At all times the Assistant Caretaker fills a service role to students, teachers and persons in the school community.
QualificationsEducation
Minimum education level of Grade 12 or equivalent.
Experience
Institutional custodial experience is desired.
Skills and Abilities
- Reading, writing and verbal skills in the English language are essential. Individual must be able to communicate effectively in English.
- General knowledge of institutional cleaning methods and products; ability to operate cleaning equipment such as polishers, auto scrubbers, etc.
- Ability to interact effectively and positively with students, staff and the general public.
- Availability to work either day or afternoon shifts during breaks and in-service days.
- Ability to work independently and cooperatively as a team member.
Physical Requirements
- Good general fitness to fulfill the duties of an Assistant Caretaker for the required shift.
- Ability to lift and carry 20 kg (45 lbs) for approximately 20 m (60 ft).
Maintains cleanliness of the facility
- Cleans assigned areas according to identified procedures, including sweeping, damp mopping, vacuuming, dusting and sanitizing to maintain an attractive facility.
- Vacuuming of furniture, drapes, rugs and carpets; steam cleaning as required.
- Dusting and damp wiping of furniture, desks and window sills that are free of classroom material, as well as woodwork, handrails, ledges, chalk rails and equipment.
- Cleans and disinfects drinking fountains, shower stalls, washroom fixtures and dispensers; refills washroom dispensers as required.
- Clean chalkboard brushes and chalk rails; ensure chalkboards are cleaned at least once a year.
- Empty pencil sharpeners, waste paper baskets and other garbage containers; dispose of garbage daily in accordance with local laws and procedures.
- Remove graffiti as soon as possible.
- Clean mirrors, windows and other internal glass surfaces.
- Clean light fixtures as required.
- Strip, scrub, spray buff and apply finish to floors as required; ensure floors are clean, attractive and properly maintained.
- Provide written reports to the Head Caretaker identifying items requiring immediate attention (e.g., buzzing ballasts, graffiti, broken glass, vandalism).
Maintains Equipment and Supplies
- Clean and maintain custodial equipment after each use (mops, vacuum cleaners, auto scrubbers, floor machines, etc.); report malfunctions to the Head Caretaker.
- Maintain adequate quantities of custodial supplies in the assigned closet; request additional supplies from the Head Caretaker.
Providing Direction & Orientation to Casual Staff
Assists in providing direction and orientation to replacement staff; provides keys to replacement staff and ensures keys are returned upon completion of assignment.
