Salary: $17.07 - $22.14 per hour ($34,396.05 - $44,612.10 per annum)

Responsibilities
  • Caretaker coverage on a three‑shift basis, maintaining cleanliness in student areas, shower rooms, locker rooms, change rooms, lunch rooms, offices, classrooms, labs, lounges, halls, stairs, and building entrances.
  • Maintains floors and floor coverings using specialized equipment and maintenance techniques.
  • Vacuum, shampoo, and clean carpets, drapes, and furniture.
  • Empty ash trays, waste containers, and transport waste to pick‑up points.
  • Collect recyclable materials and transport to pick‑up points.
  • Clean and disinfect washrooms, sinks, toilets, stall dividers, and urinals daily.
  • Clean the foot bath where installed.
  • Clean drinking fountains, vanities, and mirrors daily.
  • Maintain supplies of paper towels, linen towels, toilet tissue, and soap in all dispensers.
  • Clean chalkboards and chalkboard railings.
  • Dust window sills, desks, shelving, pipes, and other fixtures.
  • Clean glass doors and dividers.
  • Wash walls and windows as required.
  • Replace burnt‑out light bulbs and maintain stock of replacements.
  • Report malfunction of lighting system, mechanical equipment, and movable screens to supervisor.
  • Turn off lights in unoccupied areas.
  • Lock and unlock entrance doors unless otherwise instructed.
  • Recognize hazardous conditions and report to supervisor immediately.
  • Maintain grounds around buildings.
  • Clear snow and ice at building entrances, sidewalks, stairways, platforms, etc.
  • Distribute traction aid and ice melt as required.
  • Set up tables, chairs, dividers, etc., for examinations, banquets, movies, convocation, registration, or other special events per provided diagrams.
  • Maintain liaison with special function organizers, conference and catering.
  • Clean mechanical rooms, heat radiators, drains, etc., as assigned by supervisor.
  • Carry out minor maintenance (e.g., unplug toilets, oil hinges, replace glides on chairs) and maintain caretaking equipment (check/clean machines, filters, vacuum bags, pads, fluid levels, hoses, power cords, batteries).
  • Record hours of work on work orders and daily time cards.
  • Check fire extinguishers and fire doors.
  • Move furniture and other items to and from storage and other areas.
  • Recognize and report any hazardous situations to the immediate supervisor.
  • For residence facilities only: thoroughly clean residence rooms each spring and fall, and clean, set up and provide or change linen in residence rooms for conferences.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma (Grade 12).
  • Minimum one year of practical or position‑related experience.
  • Good knowledge of cleaning procedures and grounds maintenance.
  • Experience in the safe operation and maintenance of equipment such as floor polishers, vacuum cleaners, carpet extractors, power scrubbers, lawnmowers, weed eaters, and snow blowers.
  • Ability to communicate in English, both verbally and written.
  • Ability to follow verbal, written, and diagrammed instruction in English.
  • Ability to communicate and relate well with staff, students, event organizers, and the public.
  • Ability to work independently or in teams with minimal supervision.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Good customer service skills.
  • Willingness to work outdoors during summer and winter.
  • Adherence to all safety standards as established by the Physical Plant department.
  • Completion of established job‑related training programs such as WHMIS.
  • Availability to work shifts, including weekends.
  • Maintaining satisfactory work record of attendance and punctuality.

  • Physical capability to perform duties assigned.
  • Ability to perform heavy and repetitive lifting, bending, and stretching.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to climb ladders.
  • Pass required FIT assessment and related safety training.
  • Ability to work in awkward, confined spaces and high locations.
