Student Labourer – Building Operations

7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday to Friday. Salary: $16.00 per hour. Posted: 127104. Closing date:

Overview

The Student Labourer works under the general supervision of the Foreman Grade 2 (Central Control) or the Supervisor of Building Operation Services. The role involves outdoor duties such as snow removal, litter control, special event setup/take‑downs and general landscape/facility work on City owned properties. Positions are required for the period of May through August, with April 15 being the earliest start date and September 15 the latest release date.

All applicants must be available to start work at short notice and intend on returning to school at the end of season.

Responsibilities
  • Perform outdoor property maintenance.
  • Assist with setup and takedown for special events.
  • Assist in building operations and maintenance work.
Education and Qualifications
  • Grade VIII or equivalent; will be returning to school in the fall.
  • Experience with property maintenance tools (power brooms, leaf blowers, material spreaders, shovels, rakes, etc.).
  • Demonstrated ability to deal effectively with staff and members of the general public.
  • Capability to follow both oral and written instructions.
  • Experience using hand and power equipment used within this classification.
  • Knowledge of and ability to observe safety rules and regulations.
  • Willingness to learn additional skills necessary for this classification.
  • Ability to review and understand Safe Work Procedures and attend training in the proper use of power equipment used within the classification.
  • Valid Manitoba 5th Class Driver’s License is desired.
  • Applicants educated outside Canada must have education comparable to the minimum qualification in Canada; foreign credential applicants must provide an official academic assessment report issued by a recognized Canadian assessment service.
Conditions of Employment
  • Must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada; if holding a work permit, the applicant is responsible for ensuring its validity.
  • Police Information Check (with vulnerable sector check) satisfactory to the employer will be required at the applicant’s expense.
  • A Winnipeg Police Service Level 3 Clearance will be required for positions that access WPS facilities.
  • Must be physically able to perform duties in all weather conditions.
