BASIC FUNCTION: The Assistant Caretaker is responsible for the routine cleaning, comfort and safety of the school’s physical facilities. The Assistant Caretaker provides assistance to the school’s Head Caretaker with the physical activities of operating the school building.
WORKING RELATIONSHIP: The Assistant Caretaker reports to the Head Caretaker. In his or her absence, the Assistant Caretaker accepts direction from the Caretaker 1 and/or Principal, and also from the evening Custodial Co‑ordinator. The Assistant Caretaker fills a service role to students, teachers and persons in the school community.

Minimum education level of Grade 12 or equivalent. - Experience: Institutional custodial experience is desired.
- Skills and Abilities: Reading, writing and verbal skills in the English language are essential. The individual must be able to communicate effectively in English, possess a general knowledge of institutional cleaning methods and products, and be able to operate cleaning equipment such as polishers and auto scrubbers. The individual must be able to interact effectively and positively with students, staff and the general public, be available to work day or afternoon shifts during breaks and in-service days, and be able to work independently and cooperatively as a team member.
- Physical Requirements: Good general fitness; able to pick up 20 kg (45 lbs) and carry this weight 20 m (60 ft.).
Position Duties and Responsibilities
Clean assigned area according to identified procedures, including sweeping, damp mopping, vacuuming, dusting and sanitizing to ensure an attractive facility.Vacuum furniture, drapes, rugs and carpets and steam clean as required.Dust and/or damp wipe furniture, desks and window sills that are free of classroom material, and clean woodwork, handrails, ledges, chalk rails and equipment.Clean and disinfect drinking fountains, shower stalls, washroom fixtures and dispensers, and refill all washroom dispensers as required.Clean chalkboard brushes and chalk rails as required and ensure chalkboards are thoroughly cleaned at least once a year.Empty pencil sharpeners, waste paper baskets and other garbage containers; dispose of garbage daily into an external container in compliance with local laws and procedures.Remove graffiti as soon as possible.Clean mirrors, windows and other internal glass surfaces.Strip, scrub, spray buff and apply finish to floors as required to ensure floors are clean, attractive and properly maintained.Provide a written report to the Head Caretaker when necessary, identifying items that require immediate attention (e.g., buzzing ballasts, graffiti, broken glass, other vandalism).Clean and maintain custodial equipment after each use, including but not limited to mops, vacuum cleaners, auto scrubbers and floor machines; report all malfunctions to the Head Caretaker.Maintain adequate quantities of custodial supplies in the assigned custodial closet and request additional supplies from the Head Caretaker.Assist in providing direction and orientation to replacement staff; provide keys and ensure keys are returned upon completion of assignment.Maintain a positive working relationship with educational staff, students and fellow staff members.Visually check the facility to ensure building security; secure the facility and activate the building alarm system at the end of the shift.Provide assistance and direction to groups using space within the facility.Set up furniture and equipment for conferences, lectures, special events and other user groups as identified on permits or directed by the Head Caretaker and/or Principal.Monitor permit activities in assigned areas; make equipment specified on permits available, ensure it is returned and report any damage or problems associated with the activities to the Head Caretaker.Receive and move shipments, equipment, furniture and supplies as required.Respond appropriately in emergency situations by performing repairs and clean‑up within…
