Job DescriptionBASIC FUNCTION: The Assistant Caretaker is responsible for the routine cleaning, comfort and safety of the school’s physical facilities. The Assistant Caretaker provides assistance to the school’s Head Caretaker with the physical activities of operating the school building.
WORKING RELATIONSHIP: The Assistant Caretaker reports to the Head Caretaker in charge of the school. In the absence of the Head Caretaker, the Assistant Caretaker accepts direction from the Caretaker 1 and/or Principal. The Assistant Caretaker also accepts direction from the evening Custodial Co‑ordinator. At all times the Assistant Caretaker fills a service role to students, teachers and persons in the school community.
Qualifications- Minimum education level of Grade 12 or equivalent.
- Institutional custodial experience is desired.
- Reading, writing and verbal skills in the English language are essential. Must be able to communicate effectively in English.
- Must possess a general knowledge of institutional cleaning methods and products and have the ability to operate such cleaning equipment as polishers, auto scrubbers, etc.
- Must possess the ability to interact effectively and positively with students, staff and the general public.
- Must be available to work either day or afternoon shifts during breaks and in‑service days.
- Must possess the ability to work independently and co‑operatively as a team member.
- Physical requirements:
good general fitness, ability to pick up 20 kg (45 lbs) and carry this weight 20 m (60 ft.).
- Maintain cleanliness of the facility – sweeping, damp mopping, vacuuming, dusting, sanitizing, floor cleaning, etc.
- Vacuum furniture, drapes, rugs and carpets and steam clean as required.
- Dust/damp wipe furniture, desks, windows, woodwork, handrails, ledges, chalk rails, and equipment.
- Clean and disinfect drinking fountains, shower stalls, washroom fixtures and dispensers; refill dispensers as needed.
- Clean chalkboard brushes and chalk rails; ensure chalkboards are thoroughly cleaned at least once a year.
- Empty pencil sharpeners, waste paper baskets and other garbage containers; dispose of garbage daily in compliance with local laws.
- Remove graffiti promptly.
- Clean mirrors, windows and other internal glass surfaces.
- Strip, scrub, spray buff and apply finish to floors as required.
- Provide written reports to the Head Caretaker for items requiring immediate attention.
- Maintain equipment and supplies – clean custodial equipment after each use, report malfunctions, keep adequate supplies, request additional supplies when needed.
- Assist in providing direction and orientation to replacement staff; provide and retrieve keys.
- Maintain positive working relationships with educational staff, students and fellow staff members.
- Check facility to ensure building security, secure facility and activate alarm system at shift end.
- Assist and direct groups using space within the facility.
- Set up furniture and equipment for conferences, lectures, special events and other user groups as directed.
- Monitor permit activities in assigned areas; report any damage or problems to the Head Caretaker.
- Receive and move shipments, equipment, furniture and supplies as required.
- Respond appropriately in emergency situations, perform repairs and clean‑up within limits of ability, assist trades or service personnel.
- Remain on assigned premises for the duration of shift unless directed otherwise.
- Perform duties during school breaks (summer, Christmas, spring).
- Report break‑ins, vandalism and emergency situations to the Head Caretaker or Principal.
- Perform non‑routine cleaning assignments when possible, covering permit activities on weekends; ensure clean‑up after each activity.
