Position: Labourer - Labourer (Unifor)

Work schedule:

38.75 hours/week, Monday to Friday, 2:00 pm - 10:15 pm

Salary: $18.57 to $19.58 per hour ($37,418.55 to $39,453.70 per annum)

  • License:
    Valid Class 5 Manitoba Driver's License

MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING:

  • High School Diploma (Grade 12)

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum 3 years - significant practical or position related experience

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Good driving record as demonstrated by a positive driver’s abstract.
  • Understand and be willing to participate in all safety programs and initiatives designed to ensure the well-being of all staff.
  • Must be able to communicate and follow instructions in English (verbal and written)

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • The work environment across the University includes high rise buildings, academic and research facilities with laboratories, libraries, lecture theatres, office spaces, residences for students and recreational space for an active staff and student population of approximately 40,000.
  • Industrial spaces also exist for essential campus services including high pressure steam and high voltage electrical distribution, water storm and waste networks, as well as tunnels, confined and restricted access spaces.
  • The full ranges of municipal services are delivered across campus including mail, parcel and parts delivery, garbage and recycling pickup, snow removal and roads and grounds maintenance.
  • Outdoor spaces are included in the work environment and the inherent climactic conditions include winter and summer temperature variations that range from extreme cold to extreme heat.
  • Most work is physically demanding and some work environments present hazards that involve safe work procedures and precautions.
  • Must be physically capable of performing the duties as assigned.
  • Must be able to pass required FIT assessment and related safety training. Must be able to work in awkward, confined spaces and high locations.
  • Must be able to perform related duties as assigned.
  • Must be physically capable of performing the duties as assigned.
  • Must be able to perform heavy and repetitive lifting, bending, stretching, etc.
  • Must be able to lift and carry a minimum of 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to climb ladders.

OTHER:

  • Regular attendance and punctuality is required.
  • Will be required to provide acceptable Criminal Record and Vulnerable Persons Registry checks.
Key responsibilities
  • Cuts and trims lawns, plants and waters flowers, fertilizes plants and lawns, maintains shrub beds, removes litter and performs other related grounds maintenance duties.
  • Assists with planting trees, shrubs, installing sod and performs other related landscaping duties.
  • Operates hand mowers, string trimmers and snow blowers.
  • Operates cargo vans, pick up trucks and utility vehicles for self-transportation and to move materials or equipment used to carry out daily duties.
  • Clears snow and spreads traction grit at building entrances, sidewalks and platforms.
  • Installs and repairs paving stones.
  • Moves furniture, materials and equipment for University departments.
  • Uses power hand tools
  • Assembles and disassembles modular furniture, office furniture and desks.
  • Assists with loading, unloading and delivering of materials.
  • Assists with moving materials and removing debris.
  • Performs setups for special events such as examinations, convocation and similar University and student events.
  • Assists with the coordination of Campus Beautification Day activities.
  • Assists with annual fire extinguisher and fire hose inspections.
  • Cleans and washes vehicles.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
