The Role:

Are you a curious writer who loves meeting people, asking thoughtful questions and uncovering the stories that bring a community to life?

Winnipeg Foundation is looking for a Communications Advisor with strong journalistic instincts and the versatility to write across a range of formats. You might spend one day interviewing a community leader for an impact story and the next preparing speaking notes, a news release or compelling advertising copy.

This is an ideal opportunity for an emerging communications professional who cares deeply about Winnipeg and wants to use their writing to connect generosity with meaningful community impact.

Areas of Responsibility
Content Creation - At the heart of this role is storytelling.

Research, interview, and write engaging stories about donors, community organizations and the people creating positive change in Winnipeg.

Find the human story within complex subjects and communicate it with accuracy, sensitivity and respect.

Write and edit content for our website, magazine, newsletters, email, social media and print publications.

Prepare speaking notes, news releases, key messages, advertising copy, event materials and other public-facing communications.

Adapt stories and messages for different audiences, purposes and channels.

Coordinate interviews with donors, fund holders, staff, community partners and other stakeholders.

Contribute to photography, video and audio projects and content when needed.

Proofread and revise materials to ensure they are clear, accurate, accessible and consistent with the Foundation’s voice.

Maintain editorial calendars, publishing schedules and project workflows.

Support communications for campaigns, announcements, events, granting programs and community initiatives.

Monitor basic website and social media results and apply what you learn to future content.

Collaborate with colleagues across the Foundation and contribute to a positive, dependable team environment.

As our Communications Advisor, you will:

Produce accurate, polished and engaging communications.

Build trusting relationships with interview subjects and colleagues.

Tell stories that connect donors and generosity with community outcomes.

Shift confidently between feature writing, public relations and advertising copy.

Meet deadlines and follow editorial, brand and approval processes.

Approach community stories with curiosity, care and respect.

Continue developing your skills as a writer and communications professional.

Experience, Education, and Credentials
You are a strong and thoughtful writer who can move comfortably between storytelling and public relations. You know how to listen, find the most meaningful details and turn information into writing people want to read.

A diploma or degree in journalism, communications, public relations, marketing, English or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

3- 5 years of experience in journalism, communications, content development, public relations, marketing or digital media.

Experience in the non-profit, charitable, community or public sector is an asset. Skills in photography, video, audio or digital analytics are also welcome, along with a willingness to keep learning.

Strong writing, editing, interviewing and proofreading skills.

Skills and Abilities
