Hours of Work: Temporary Full‑Time Position (approximately 6 months), Day Shifts
Pay Band: $65.59-$74.61 per hour

Location: Kingston General Hospital Site - Mental Health Emergency Services Unit (Section E and Section E‑North)
Primary FunctionThe Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a Registered Nurse in the Extended Class with additional educational preparation and experience, who possesses and demonstrates the competencies to autonomously diagnose, order and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe pharmaceuticals, and perform specific procedures within their legislated scope of practice. The NP works in an extended nursing role demonstrating a high level of autonomy and expert skill in order to formulate clinical decisions, appropriately manage acute illness and promote wellness within their area of specialty.
The NP explicitly consults the interprofessional team where care is required outside of the NP scope of practice and/or not covered by a Medical Directive.
- Clinical Domain :
Provide direct, comprehensive clinical care to patients and families. Work autonomously to diagnose, order and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe pharmaceuticals, and perform procedures within the legislated scope of practice. Collaborate with the interprofessional team and support the care of the patient and family. Provide comprehensive clinical care to patients of all ages in the Emergency Department Sections E and E‑North.
Perform rotating and weekend shifts as first call for hospital consultations, transfers, and inpatient care. - Research :
Ensure patient care and nursing practice innovations are supported by research and are reflective of evidence‑based or current best practice guidelines. Participate in and utilize research that improves patient outcomes and contributes to nursing knowledge. Evaluate current practices at individual and system levels to identify gaps and areas for future research. - Education :
Serve as a resource, coach, and mentor to the interprofessional team, especially regarding area of expertise and complex patient/client and family situations. Act as an educator and preceptor to students. Identify learning needs and apply adult education concepts to plan, design and implement educational strategies. Provide consultation for patients, families, and community partners. Collaborate with Queens University and other academic partners to meet training and professional development requirements. - Leadership :
Identify and manage risk related to clinical practice, improve practice through development, implementation and evaluation of guidelines, standards, policies and procedures. Participate in clinical and organizational committees. Promote evidence‑based practice and continuous quality improvement. Provide leadership and consultancy on professional practice to nursing colleagues locally and regionally. Advocate for individuals, families, groups and communities regarding treatment and health policy decisions.
Qualifications
- Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as Registered Nurse in the Extended Class with the specialty class of Adult (with preference for Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Program).
- Master of Science (Nursing) or a Master’s degree in a relevant discipline.
- Membership with a professional organization such as CNA, RNAO or NPAO.
- A CNA specialty in the area of primary focus (asset).
- Minimum 3 years of nursing experience in Mental Health.
- Demonstrated understanding of the Ontario Mental Health Act.
- Demonstrated ability to educate staff, patients and families.
- Demonstrated leadership skills and strong mentoring, teaching, team‑building, and change‑leadership abilities.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, presentation and documentation skills.
- Proficient in working independently and collaboratively with all team members.
- Strong time‑management, organizational and prioritization skills.
- Evidence‑based decision making and critical‑thinking abilities.
- Knowledge of computer databases, data analysis and presentation packages.
- Proof of regular attendance.
- Satisfactory criminal reference check required.
- Committed to ongoing participation in the College of Nurses of Ontario’s Quality Assurance requirements.
