Registered Nurse / Registered Psychiatric Nurse

Position within the Inpatient Unit – Eden Mental Health Centre.

  • Hours Of Work: 2015 annually; 7.75 hr/day (includes evenings, nights, weekends as per rotation)
Job Narrative

The nurse serves as a resource to patients as they transition from acute illness to stabilization and discharge. The role encourages patients to mobilize internal resources and recognize their capabilities for managing life with mental illness.

Qualifications
  • Qualified Registered Psychiatric Nurse or Registered Nurse in Manitoba with a current nursing license.
  • Thorough knowledge of nursing theory and practice.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Observe the Code of Ethics of the licensing body.
  • Physically and mentally capable of performing duties assigned.
Other Requirements and Conditions of Employment
  • Current active registration in good standing with the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba or College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Manitoba.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check (including Vulnerable Sector Check).
  • Satisfactory Child Abuse Registry Check.
  • Satisfactory Adult Abuse Registry Check.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Assessment Duties:

  • Assess patients every shift, gathering data related to mental status, safety, treatment progress, and goal achievement.
  • Use therapeutic conversations to reflect on patient situations, goals, and choices.
  • Document assessments and update treatment plans accordingly.
  • Determine the best action within facility rules and requirements.

Planning Duties:

  • Develop nursing care plans with the treatment team based on prioritized needs.
  • Review and update plans at regular intervals, including doctor’s rounds, team meetings, and electronic records.
  • Plan short-term (hours) and long-term (weeks) care in collaboration with the patient.

Implementation Duties:

  • Provide direct nursing care, coordinate therapies, and educate patients.
  • Delegate tasks appropriately while maintaining accountability.
  • Engage in therapeutic conversations to build rapport and social skills.
  • Ensure clear documentation in Kardex, charts, and communication tools.
  • Maintain up-to-date inpatient records and advocate for patient needs.
  • Ensure doctor’s orders are processed and medications administered.

Evaluation Duties:

  • Review treatment plans with patients and the team regularly.
  • Assess patient responses to interventions and evaluate progress toward goals.
  • Revise plans as required in consultation with the patient and team members.
Responsibilities of Primary Nurse
  • Provide overall direction of the patient treatment plan.
  • Ensure current documentation of the plan in Kardex and behavior plans.
  • Facilitate communication within the treatment team.
  • Identify additional patient engagement opportunities (music therapy, physical activity, play, etc.).
Responsibilities of Charge Nurse
  • Facilitate communication among nurses, PNAs, TPAAs, social workers, and physicians.
  • Communicate with psychiatrists regarding bed availability and other patient issues.
  • Address concerns requiring administrative input.
  • Relay information about staffing needs for the shift.
  • Address concerns of other departments when the Inpatient Unit Manager is unavailable.
Secondary Duties
  • Assist in the Depot Clinic after completion of required training, providing depot medication services to outpatients.
  • Support the development and implementation of related outpatient services.
  • Assist with hand hygiene and staff education.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
  • Physically and mentally capable of carrying out assigned duties.
  • Work evenings, nights, and weekends per rotation.
