Nurse - Public Health Nurse - Antenatal Home Care
Position Overview
The role of the Public Health Nurse (PHN) is to apply public health science and nursing theory to promote, protect and preserve the health of populations. Services may be directed to individuals, families, groups or communities across the life span. PHNs apply appropriate strategies to prevent injuries, chronic and communicable diseases, address environmental issues, promote reproductive and sexual health, and promote the health of perinatal women, their partners, infants and families.
They work to improve the health of all people and reduce inequities by addressing determinants of health and promoting equitable outcomes. PHNs provide services in communities, across communities and across the region.
Under the direction of a team manager, the PHN – Antenatal Home Care (AHC) works collaboratively with women/families, physicians/obstetrical providers, and other sectors to treat and manage high‑risk pregnancy complications and promote optimal maternal and fetal outcomes. Responsibilities include initial and ongoing health assessments, coordination of laboratory and fetal assessments, monitoring lab values, and providing health education and ongoing support.
Experience- Two years of nursing experience required.
- Recent, relevant experience and demonstrated competency in public health, primary care, population‑level health promotion, community development, or infection prevention and control settings preferred. Relevant experience may include:
- Applying principles of health promotion, primary prevention, population health, primary healthcare, harm reduction, and community development.
- Family and child health.
- Promoting equity with populations experiencing lower health status (e.g., street‑involved persons, lower income, vulnerable families).
- Communicable disease control.
- Two years of recent (within the last five years) high‑risk obstetrics experience required. This may include acute care in labor and delivery, antepartum settings, or Antenatal Home Care Program experience.
- Baccalaureate Nursing degree required.
- Preferred additional qualifications:
- Completion of Public Health Agency of Canada Skills Enhancement for Public Health Program content module certificate.
- Canadian Community Health Nurses certification – CCHN(C).
- Related master’s level course completion (e.g., epidemiology, community development, community nursing).
- Current College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba Registration (CRNM) required.
- Active participation in professional associations (e.g., Association of Regulated Nurses of Manitoba) preferred.
- Valid Manitoba Class 5 driver’s licence required.
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training as required by Employer policy.
- International Board‑Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) or completion of Douglas College Breastfeeding Counsellor Certificate Program preferred.
- International Society for Travel Medicine (ISTM) Certification for Travel Health positions preferred.
- Scope of practice as documented in the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA) / Registered Psychiatric Nurses Act.
- Demonstrated leadership ability.
- Ability to work independently and within a professional team.
- Knowledge, skill and interest in working with diverse populations, including various backgrounds, lifestyles, abilities and health statuses.
- Competence in community and agency collaboration.
- Strong skills in conflict management, problem solving, teaching, counselling and workload organization.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (English).
- Ability to facilitate groups and apply adult education principles.
- Proficiency in computer software applications.
- Physically capable of carrying out clinical skills related to pregnancy assessment and management (e.g., Leopold’s manoeuvre, vital signs, fetal heart rate, edema assessment).
- Physically able to push, pull, lift or carry equipment up to 50 lbs, using proper equipment or assistance where necessary.
- Physically capable of providing services in a variety of community settings under varying weather and environmental conditions.
- Access to and use of a reliable motor vehicle during working hours.
- Acceptable Child Abuse Registry check and Criminal Record check.
- Subject to immunisations and tuberculin testing as per WRHA Policy.
This position requires a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check at the time of employment. The successful candidate is responsible for any related service charges incurred.
