Shared Health leads the planning and coordinates the integration of patient‑centred clinical and preventive health services across Manitoba. The organization also delivers some province‑wide health services and supports centralised administrative and business functions for Manitoba health organisations.
Position Overview
The Undergraduate Nursing Employee (UNE) position offers nursing students the opportunity to consolidate the knowledge and skills acquired in their approved nursing education programme towards competency in Registered Nurse (RN) or Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN) practice. The UNE is an unregulated member of the collaborative health care team who provides patient‑centred care under the supervision of an RN or RPN. Nursing activities and required supervision are determined by legislation, regulatory standards, employer policy, educational preparation, practice setting complexity, patient risk, and the UNE’s competency.
The RN or RPN at the point of care assigns a reasonable and prudent UNE patient care assignment. The UNE is accountable for safe nursing care, seeks consultation and guidance, and is not employed while in a clinical placement as a student. Patient definition : a patient is an adult or child who receives or has requested health care or services from a Regional Health Authority and/or Shared Health, and its health care providers or individuals authorised to act on their behalf, including residents, clients and outpatients.
Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)
Current enrolment in an approved nursing education programme leading to initial entry to practice as a Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse.
Successful completion of the third year or enrolment in the third year with a minimum of 450 hours of clinical practice in an approved nursing education programme leading to initial entry to practice as a Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse.
In addition to the minimum 450 hours, completion of a clinical placement in a medical/surgical or mental health setting is required to work in relevant patient care areas. Additional clinical practice hours or specific course completion from the approved nursing education programme may be required to qualify for some patient care settings.
Certification / Licensure / Registration
Registered student in accordance with the policies and procedures of the education institution at which they are enrolled in an approved nursing education programme.
Qualifications and Skills
Acquired competencies in clinical nursing practice to provide safe, quality nursing care under supervision.
Ability to work as a member of a team and request guidance and consultation.
Accepts direction, guidance and constructive feedback.
Critical thinking skills including clinical judgement, problem‑solving and evaluation reflective of level of formal nursing education.
Communicates clearly, appropriately and respectfully with patient, family and health‑care team members.
Has an attitude and behaviour that conveys respect and dignity of all persons.
Establishes professional, safe, inclusive and respectful relationships.
Independent and shared accountability in a just and trusting culture.
Demonstrates competencies when working with patients, families, staff, students and volunteers.
Displays a compassionate, empathic and caring attitude.
Basic use of technology and competency in computers, clinical electronic devices and electronic documentation.
Adheres to all applicable clinical documentation requirements per site policies.
Physical Requirements
