Under the supervision of a Gardener 3 or designate, the Gardener 1 will perform skilled work in the care of perennials, bedding plants, shrubs and landscaped areas. Maintenance tasks include weeding, watering, cultivating, staking, pruning, preparing planting beds with hand tools and power tools, integrating soil amendments, planting flower beds, planters, planning, etc. In the course of carrying out daily tasks, the Gardener 1 practices established safety procedures in the execution of assigned duties and ensures public safety.
AsThe Gardener 1 You Will
- Be responsible for operating, cleaning, and maintaining various tools, vehicles, and equipment; completing reports, working outdoors in all weather conditions, and following established safe work practices, operational policies, and procedures.
- Senior 4 (Grade 12) education, GED or equivalent combination of training, experience, and education will be considered.
- Horticulture post‑secondary education, training and/or courses would be an asset.
- A valid Manitoba Pesticide Applicator's License (Core plus Landscape category) considered an asset.
- Experience in gardening activities specific to care and maintenance of annuals, perennials, bedding plants and shrubs for a minimum of one gardening season or equivalent; or related horticultural training, courses, education; or a combination of experience and knowledge obtained through relevant training, courses, etc.
- Ability to identify different species and varieties of annuals, perennials, trees, and shrubs.
- Ability to operate small equipment, hand and power tools, and vehicles required in carrying out the duties of the position.
- Ability to work as directed, and follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to organize and mentor junior staff.
- Ability to successfully complete additional courses at the request of the Department or as per Legislation.
- General knowledge of conventional horticultural practices and commonly used landscape plants and shrubs.
- Successful completion of or willing to obtain:
- First Aid Certificate
- WHMIS/GHS
- Temporary Traffic Control
- Lead Hand Training
- Customer Service
- Indigenous Training Orientation
- Effective written communication with the ability to complete accurate records.
- Effective verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization, external contacts and the general public.
