Qualifications
Minimum Formal Education/Training
Required:
Bachelor's Degree in Animal Science or a related study area, including laboratory analysis techniques.
Completion of a Community College course in a related discipline with one year of directly-related experience.
High school completion with job-related options and a minimum of four years of directly-related experience.
M.Sc. in Animal Science, Food Science, Chemistry, Biochemistry preferred.
Experience:
Several years’ experience in nutritional lab techniques is preferred.
Working experience with animals.
Working knowledge of gas-liquid chromatograph and spectrophotometer is preferred.
An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Skills and Abilities:
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written required.
Ability to organize, demonstrate and guide the work of junior staff and graduate students.
Ability to maintain records and tracking systems. Operating and maintenance of equipment used in nutrition analyses.
Ability to administer specific phases of projects.
Must be able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
A satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.

Familiarity with computer software packages.
Knowledge of WHMIS and radioactive/hazardous materials protocols and regulations preferred.
Must be free of allergies to animals, dander, dust, ammonia or chemicals used in the position.
Key Responsibilities
Responsibilities:
Evaluation of chemical composition of symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast (SCOBY):
Conduct assays to determine their chemical properties, including protein and amino acids, dietary fibre, starch, sugars, glucosinolates, fat, minerals, and other nutritionally important components.
Organize the inventory of selected samples and their corresponding chemical composition data.
Review the chemical composition data of feed ingredients obtained in an earlier research program.
Perform analyses of the prebiotic potential of feed ingredients.
Calculate and present the assay results.
Maintain laboratory standards for chemical assays.
Evaluation of new enzymes for dietary fibre degradation of feed stuffs:
Conduct assays with new microbial cultures/enzymes to determine their ability to depolymerize cell wall polysaccharides of canola, expelled canola, expelled soybean, flaxseed, pulse crops, etc.
Organize inventory of exogenous enzyme preparations and maintain the record of analyses.
Determine the extent of fiber and its components degradation, including the analysis of cell wall polysaccharides, glycoproteins, and lignin with associated polyphenols.
Calculate and present the assay results.
Nutrient digestibility and growth performance trials with broiler chickens and laying hens:
Perform proximate analyses of experimental diet.
Care of animals and maintenance of cages.
Collection of digesta and excreta samples.
Perform nutrient and chromic oxide analyses.
Calculate and present nutrient digestibility data.
General laboratory duties:
Preparation of samples for analyses (defatting, grinding, weighing, etc.).
Organize, schedule and perform analyses on feed stuffs.
Order chemicals, laboratory supplies and small laboratory equipment and assist others in doing so.
Maintain or assist in maintenance of laboratory facilities and equipment.
Preparation of analytical standards and cleaning of glassware.
Demonstrate, guide and provide training to students and visiting scientists in the use of laboratory equipment, chemical analyses and safety procedures in ANSC 118 lab.
Attend to questions from students and staff regarding routine lab problems.
Maintain a level of cleanliness in the lab as required by an analytical lab environment.
May be required to perform related duties not exceeding skills and capabilities as required.
