The Associate Vice President (Research) is appointed for a five (5) year fixed term, renewable once for an additional five (5) year term, subject to performance and institutional requirements. This position is a senior administrative appointment and is not a tenure track or tenured position.
The Associate Vice‑President (Research) (AVP(R)) is a senior academic leader responsible for advancing the University of Manitoba’s research mission by providing institutional leadership and operational oversight across the full spectrum of research administration. The AVP(R) strengthens research quality and capacity, oversees internal funding mechanisms, ensures compliance with research policies and regulations, and supports researchers at all career stages. This role is primarily administrative in nature and constitutes a senior executive position.
Qualifications- PhD and an established record of research achievement.
- Demonstrated leadership experience in research administration, academic governance, or compliance oversight.
- Demonstrated senior administrative experience.
- Strong understanding of Tri‑Agency policies, RCR frameworks, research ethics, animal care regulations, biosafety, and CFI processes.
- Experience chairing committees, leading complex evaluations, and managing research support units.
- Commitment to advancing inclusivity in research.
- Strong communication, analytical, and collaborative leadership skills.
- Provide leadership in developing and implementing research policies, frameworks, and evaluation practices that enhance research excellence and integrity.
- Lead ongoing improvements to internal review and adjudication processes, ensuring fairness, transparency, and principles of inclusivity.
- Participate in and oversee academic reviews to ensure research quality and alignment with institutional standards.
- Contribute to institutional research planning and strategic initiatives led by the VPRI.
- Lead the administration, design, and continuous improvement of internal funding programs.
- Chair the Internal Grants Program Committee, ensuring efficient operation of competition cycles and high‑quality adjudication.
- Chair the Internal CFI (Canada Foundation for Innovation) Committee, overseeing internal review and prioritization of CFI proposals.
- Monitor participation, success rates, and program performance to ensure internal funds effectively support research development and strategic priorities.
- Assist with the investigation phase of Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) cases, exercising delegated authority from the VPRI and ensuring adherence to institutional policies and national frameworks.
- Assure compliance in searches for externally funded research chairs (e.g., CRC, CERC, Canada Impact+ Research Chairs), ensuring processes meet Tri‑Agency and institutional requirements.
- Provide senior oversight of institutional Animal Care and Biosafety functions, ensuring regulatory compliance and best practices.
- Support and liaise with the responsible committees and units to maintain high standards for ethics, safety, and responsible conduct in research.
- Ensure alignment with national and international guidelines governing animal care and biohazardous materials.
- Provide direct supervision of the Office of Research Services (ORS), including internal grants, external funding support, and research development services.
- Provide direct supervision of human research ethics coordination, animal care, biosafety, and RCR administration.
- Ensure these units operate efficiently, consistently, and in alignment with institutional strategic priorities.
